I've been going back and forth about a controller upgrade for a while now.. I'm leaning toward the full Apex but the sticker shock is definitely up there. I keep going back and forth between upgrading my current rkl (ph monitor and another power strip) or selling the rkl and going with an Apex. I like the iPhone capability and the extra control (read... Stability) it will provide. But I just can't decide if it's a necessity or a new toy.

Just save up and do the upgrade when the sticker shock won't be such an impact. I will be going from the RKL to the Apex as well, same reason, smart phone capability for if and when I go away.

I don't think there's such a thing as overthinking options in this hobby. Our decisions directly impact our tank inhabitants lives.

I mean.. I have the cash for the controller, but.. my concern is that I can probably get everything I NEED with about $100 worth of upgrades. With the full-on Apex I'm looking at dropping $450 (not counting what I could get by selling my multicontroller and current RKL) and, that leaves me wondering.. is the extra $$ necessary, or just for the extra bells and whistles?

FOR ME! Just got it!

Check the diff between the Apex and the Apex Lite. Unless you need the extra options you can save some cash.

I was thinking that, but with the VDM that comes with the full apex, I can sell my Multicontroller (about $100) and that will make up the difference. The Lite doesn't have the VDM. For me, there's really no point in buying the lite.

Very true! I was not planning on running lights off the APEX the AI controller works fine for me.

I also had no use for a 2nd probe, I can always add on in the future

Why is this such a difficult decision for me? :lol: I bought my light with about ten minutes of consideration and am 100% sure I made the right decision.

Decision is very easy... Go with the APEX! Much more bang for your buck! The biggest thing that it has the the RK does not have embedded is the web server. So for the RK you need to get the web interface.

Other than that, I don't see much of a difference, but that alone was enough for me to get the Apex
