Thanks for the compliment! How much LR?.... I've collected this LR over the years. I think I have probably purchased about fifty pounds of it - but what you don't see is that underneath the live rock is base rock that was bought "dead." It is all live, now, of course, and I'd say there's about a hundred pounds of it in the tank now.

Best of luck! Building this reef has been a fantastic trip :)

Thanks for the compliments :)

Now I'll tell you a (not so) secret...

My tank suffers from planaria (red flatworms), aptasia (no secret at all), red bugs, and occasional outbreaks of cyanobacteria. There is at least one rogue crab in there who, I am certain, eats things I do not wish it to eat, though at this point, I haven't noticed any losses.

I am sharing this with you because I want to share this part of the struggle that is my reef. I try very hard to work within the same construct as nature. I do not like to "zap" my tank with chemicals or drugs. I take out the planaria by hand with a turkey baster when their numbers rise. I also have a wrasse in there who eats them sometimes.

I recently picked up a few nudibranchs that eat nothing but aptasia (Huge thanks to Rich Hoffman at the NJ ECC!). I hope they survive to decimate the aptasia population in my system. The red bugs are new, and for now, I am just going to live with them and see what happens.

In terms of the cyano and other algal blooms, I try to feed conservatively when these happen, skim hard and do water changes.

I just wanted to share that even though my tank is finally looking like what I always dreamed it might look like, it comes with all those lovely pests that we all get, and since the system is strong and healthy, the balance is maintained.

A few pictures I wanted to share with you.

I got a few new fish yesterday! Thanks to Dom of Diamonds of the Reef for my citron goby, clown (green) goby, and bristle-tailed file fish (not pictured yet, because he was shy and didn't come out last night till all the lights were off!

Also pictured is one of the reasons for tanks at all - this is my younger daughter, Sara, watching and enjoying the behavior of the new fish. She's never seen gobies before, and was feeling bad for them that they don't "swim."

These new fish are not in the main tank, but rather, the kitchen tank. The FTS is the main tank, though. Please forgive me, while my computer is down, I'm using my work computer and pics taken from my phone and not my camera, so the pics are really much too small... I'll update with bigger pics soon!

time for some updated shots! These pics include many, but not all of the beautiful corals I picked up at the swap this past weekend. Thank you to Saltwater Critters, Aquatic Express, Reef Creations, Wet Thumb Frags, Cherry Corals, Pacific East Aquaculture and Live Aquaria for providing the new babies in my tank. Enjoy the pics!

A bit of sad news - in the last two months, I lost several fish to jumping. I now have covers on the tank (Thanks KathyC!), and am less worried about jumping fish.

You may also notice that there is no longer an aptasia problem! (time to change the title of this thread:) I recently got a copperband butterfly, and it took out not only feather dusters and aptasia, but even hydroids!!! Now it has settled into mysis. Yay for happy, healthy fish!

I wanted to post again about something that I've talked about before, and that's pests and balance. It's a funny thing, but at the same time my tank is both at the best I've ever known it, and it's also plagued by planaria, red bugs, green bubble algae and cyano. I know I feed generously, I didn't dip corals when I got them, and, well, I have no idea where I picked up the bubble algae. I look at my tank and I lose sight of the "forest" for the pests sometimes.

But then I post pics (and I don't hide the pests), and I get such wonderful positive feedback, and it reminds me to look at the whole picture, to realize that our systems exist in a balance of sorts, and that my system has come to a very pleasing balance. Not only are the pests thriving, but so are the fish, inverts and corals, and in truth, I worry that if and when I wipe out a pest, perhaps I will tweak the balance negatively and other things will fail as well.

For example, a whole population in my tank was recently wiped out when I added the copperband butterfly. He ate all the aptaisa, feather dusters and hydroids. That entire class of filter feeders is gone. How this will impact my tank is yet to be seen, but I can tell you that the smell and volume of the skimmate has changed. I probably have to dial down on the oyster feast and phyto.

And for any of you who are still taking the time to read this, I realized something today that I wanted to share. My mother gardened when I was a kid, and she still does. When I think back to summer vacations, I remember riding my bike or rollerskates on the sidewalk in front of my house while my mom was sitting in the garden, totally lost among her flowers, her vegetables and plants. In the winter time, she was equally lost in her kitchen widow garden, which was about 5 feet long and 5 feet high. I do not have a garden like she did and still does, but today I realized that I have my own coral garden, and I am as dedicated to it as she still is to hers. As mother's day is coming, I feel so blessed to have realized that part of my dedication to this hobby comes from her dedication to keeping living things.

(on a side note, both she and I are mildly to violently allergic to our beloved hobbies, and still we keep at it... just keep bringing on longer and stronger gloves, please :) )

Well, it has been way, WAY too long since I posted to this tank thread, but you know, when you're busy and then when your tank is not at 100%, you don't post pics.

Well, the tank is not 100% or even close to it, but it's doing okay, and like I said, it's been too long. So here are pics. I took these with my phone's camera, actually, since my "real" camera is dead at the moment. Suffice to say, the droid's camera is pretty good, but the colors are not as vibrant as in real life. Still, you'll get the idea. Enjoy....
