That first pic is a beauty. You captured the detail very nice.

What happened to the anemones, it looks like you used to have either more, or they just weren't extended in the prior pics.

Randy WOW what a great looking set up. I like how you added the disclaimer first. But I do have a couple questions; what is the actual experiment and why are you not running a skimmer nor using a sump ?

Pedro, The anemones just haven't fully opened yet, though they have more so since the photo's were taken.

Steveo, The experiment is running it sumpless/skimmerless and with virtually no filtration other than the rock, sand, clams and significant quantities of Macroalgae that grow on the rocks. The 72g. had run this way for well over a year due to a slow removal of filtration devices-- sick of crappy HOB skimmers, HOT magnum canister broke etc. I continually saw no ill effects, and in fact, this system is regularly used to revive corals ( including SPS) that are crapping out in my other systems.

Why? I don't know. Will the the new system be able to continue to function this way? We'll see. If not, it is drilled and plugged and easily converted to a sump with skimmer.

Surely, I'm not the first to run a skimmerless system, but this is a first for me, thus "experiment". I did feel the disclaimer was necessary, as I certainly would not recommend this to people as a generally sound system design. But at my stage in the game, pushing the limits a little and trying to figure out why this is working is part of what keeps me interested.

WOW that 's amazing. I can't believe that it actually works. Now do you think its becasue of over useage of natural elements ie 75lbs of live rock in a 2o0 gal tank or what ? I'm glad to see you succeeding with this "experiment" . Live on a prosper lol
