Tony, good luck with the breakdown. Do it right this time. Wait for the black foam. You don't have to have the tank broken down to add it. You can add it after you rescape, and remove the sand.

Practice what you preach, show patience. Order the foam now, and add it on Monday next week or whenever it comes in. I've seen both foams. There is no comparison between the two. You'll be glad you waited.

the only thing is i would be stressing the fish and corals more then they have to if i have to drain the water to completely do the back and sides.. after i took em out the 1st time to take out the sand and take out the rocks to get the fish out .... so much work to do :arg:....

thanks guys....

Good move Tony. However, I was under the impression you were only doing the foam in the overflow. My mistake. I didn't know you were doing the whole back glass.

Nick, I've seen steveo32's tank (thread and in person). He used the black foam on his back glass. It looks AMAZING and he doesn't even have fish and coral yet!!

I'll look for the link to Steve's tank for you.

Tony,

Can you go into more detail why you think it's the sand causing your Alk problem? I've been thinking of switching from BB and am curious.

timber the truth is i cant put my finger on anything at the moment... im trying different things out to figure out what my problem is.. i took off my phosban reactor which has phossar in it and alk still needs 280ml to stay at 9.3 ... so im going to try to take the sand out and i we will see what happens...

Tony: there are a few threads on Reef Central where members report drops in alkalinity when using Phosar. However, the effect seems limited to the initial use of that product unless it is not changed frequently enough.

hey dean... thanks for the info... i shut mine off for 2 days already and im still dosing the same... the alk has been like this since day 1... but my hoping it is the sand... im going to be running BB for a while to see if it really is... i can always add reg. aragonite sand if i want to afterwards not a big deal...

Good luck with it Tony! I'm sure it will turn out great!

That foam is usually available in large garden centers..we use it making waterfalls. It's actually a dark gray. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find it locally.

Since you asked...the rock pillar placed in the center of the tank will visually cut it in half. You might want to consider placing it off to one side of center or the other.

ok guys here is a lil update....

i had the problem with the esv sand and in no way am i bashing them i had a situation with my alk that i had to dose extreme amounts of it and pretty much wasting alk... i was dosing 280 ml of alk a day... i then took out the sand and left it barebottom for the moment and am now stable at 70ml a day at 10.9dkh, i guess my suspicions were correct... it really sucks cause i liked the look of it... O well..... at least all the hard work was done and it accomplished something :).. pics coming soon
