If my tank looked like that I would buy a skimmer. No offense, your tanks are not exactly a good example of why skimmers are a "waste of money". If you are happy with it that's great. Personally, I like to keep my tanks a little cleaner.

Good luck. I hope it keeps working out for you.

By the way this is not a new idea. Skimmerless systems were the norm. Then protein skimmers came along and advanced the hobby quite considerably.

ok switch.. I'll ask again as you may have missed it..

Just one question at this point if i may..

Taking account that the top up on just about any open top tank far exeeds whats exchanged out via water changes over a month/year/years basis....

How does the algae control accumulations of everything thats coming in via your tap water besides N03 and Po4 ?......however hard you try (unless you change out the same as you add in top up on a monthly basis..which is alot)..you are allways 'adding' (via using untreated tap water) pollutants, not taking them away..If your water change water is tap water as well, you effectively cancel out any removal.

Ie what are the algae's utilisation abilities for the various heavy metals, pesticides, and a whole stack of other contaminats that are found to varying degrees in just about every non purified water source..

If your tap water has high Ca,Mg, levels etc which you are then adding to an already balanced salt mix...how are you then balancing (in the aquarium) core element levels such as the natural oceanic balance between Ca/Alk/Mg....?

ok, so thats a few questions....I lied...:tongue1:

regards

These new ideas you speak of ... are SOOOOOO far from being new ... heck these threads show up ALL the time. From all of your posts ... it just seems you are trying to control others into believing in your method ... you don't seem to want people to have an open mind what-so-ever. Basically f*** skimmers ... the Algae scrubber is far greater, again you are right we are wrong. The least you could do is say that. I think we would all have a better understanding of where you are coming from.

Just a thought.

Again ... not trying to be an ass here ... just trying to understand where you are coming from. I have wanted to try adding an ATS to my system ... but there are reasons I have stayed away ... but also reasons that I still want to try one!

So if you don't know what's in your tap water, how can you be sure you're not poisoning your tank slowly?

As Simon said, if you're adding tap water to top off, you could be adding things to your tank that your turf scrubber won't remove. NO3 and PO4 may be removed, but what about iron, arsenic, mercury? All of these (and a lot more) can be found in tap water. If you don't believe me, here's the EPA maximum allowable contaminants list:

It could take a long time for these contaminants to reach toxic levels. I doubt anyone here has an arsenic test kit, or a mercury one, and there are nearly 100 others out there.

RO/DI = No question about the quality of the water. Well worth the money.

hmmmmm.
lets see here. Me personally, I did not think switch was attacking anyone who runs a skimmer. Maybe his words were not the correct ones but still, I don't think he was attacking skimmer users. More of a question to the users of skimmers.
I do however agree with the rest of the members, tap water is a no no. its never a good idea. Before tap water users jump this posting, I know, people use tap water and never have a problem. Still, I would never tell anyone to use tap water.
Now, what happen to this board? Since when did people start getting all high an mighty? Reef centrals looking for new supporting members.
And this thread is not useless, its allowing new members to see how nasty senior members can be to others. A good way to encourage new members, again reef central would welcome you with open arms.
If anyone wants to converse on the use of a turf scrubber and tap water then go forth. Why get nasty and jumpy over switch and how he runs his setup.
Point out the his mistakes as your opinion and let it be done at that.
As a hobbyist, how can you not be curious to see how the setups turn out.
The more and more I read and research turf scrubbers since this thread posting, its appearing to be a successful type of filtration.

yes, i do. when i bought my house i got a water report from my water company.
it may take years to reach toxic levels in your tank. then out of no where your tanks may crash.

thanks sharkbait at least u see where i am coming from

no problem. been in this hobby long enough to know, everyone has something to add.

You chose to go a diffrent path then the 'norm' dosnt make it wrong, just makes others look at you with caution.
not to be fun or mean, but like the old saying goes, better you then me. I wont try it first:tongue1:. i'll be cheering you on and see how far you and your tanks can go.
