MH bulb, Please comment

i saw a review on another forum about these bulbs. the guy stated he compared them to xm. he said that after 6 months you could actually see a noticable difference. so..without putting them under a super spectra-scope to record actual kelvin, these are shorter life bulbs.

if you google aquarmckzo, you'll notice it's sold in brazil and other spanish speaking countries. i guess a 80 dollar bulb is out of the question for most in those places.


and heart surgery is covered by insurance. who pays cash for heart surgery? we are talking about saving money here, not life and death choices.
you go to the best doctors for heart surgery. if my corals don't like these bulbs(which they do), i don't have to start grave stone shopping, i just have to go get some different bulbs.
that's absurd to use that example. do you have anything intelligent to offer to this thread? did you see something somewhere to deter you from these bulbs?

As Trido said we are talking about aquariums that cost thousands of dollars and some people are not willing to pay less for something that is so important to the hobby. Let us know how you guys are doing with your tanks after a few years. I seem to recall that Mr X and Shavo are still VERY new to this complex hobby. Cheers

i may be new to reef aquariums, but i'm not new to saving money.
and i would bet you plenty that these bulbs won't kill your reef if you hang them above it.

hey S!mon, believe me I know how much it costs to have a reef tank. I am in the thousands category as well. And I am just about in my second year for a salt/reef tank. My system is stable I have no issues with anything yet. I put alot of time into my set up and I don't think the length of time has a whole heck of alot to do with it if you understand what you are doing. As long as we're throwing around bad analogies like heart surgery in mexico. Ever hear of tiger woods? Well, when he turned pro he wasn't around "too long" and he changed and innovated the game. So think of me as the "tiger woods" of reef keeping and we should be fine. hahaha!

don't worry chris. i wouldn't stoop to trying to defirm character in order to make my point. i just give, and ask for facts.
as stated above, no one has any experience with these bulbs except for shavo and i, so, going by the "time=experience" philosophy of simon's, we are the experts. :wink:

You might try getting some of those lamps to Sanjay for testing. It would be interesting to see how they compare with some of the regular "brand name" lamps.

On another note. The General rule of thumb for MH bulb replacement.

10K- 1 year
14K- 9 months
20k- 6 months

Why is there a difference in these? Do higher kelvin bulbs lose their intesity faster?

ok..so..about those mh bulbs.... :?

on a more serious, and far more interesting note, those aquarmckzo bulbs have a somewhat thinner connector than others. what i mean is, on the double ended bulbs, the metal conductive ends are a thinner guage metal. i know they work well in your fixture shavo, but on NSP's "hommby" fixture, they don't make a good connection. you have to jiggle them to get them to fire. and then the following day, you'll find them not working again.
i have purchased some copper sheet material to build up this lacking area, but as it stands, either the double ended bulbs or the fixture's bulb mount have a chance of failure. :?

Did you ever get ahold of Sanjay? Are you sending him a couple bulbs. I would really like to see how they compare to the expensive bulbs the rest of us buy. As I said, maby you guys are getting the deal the rest of us should know about.
Then again, everyone will start buying them, the price will go up and you will resent us for blowing your good thing.

and yes, he said he would test them when he got some free time. :wink:
