K guys..

Its one of those old ballasts 175w MH and the fixture is a single ended socket.

Its going to be in a 30g 17"deep tank combined with two 96w actinics.

What brand do you recommend and how many K's for the MH Bulb?

It really depends on how blue you like it and what you want to grow.
I would buy a 14k of some sort myself.

you should get the ushikimo's or the yamifungoos!!! whatever!!!! I have not found the reason yet to buy expensive bulbs. I bought direct from china and I bought double ended 150 watt metal halides 14K for 12 dollars each bulb shipped. yes 12 dollars total! They fire up nice and look really good. Since the price was so good I bought 3 years worth of bulbs.
that is just my 2 cents worth I am sure somebody here has a good reason to spend 60 dollars a bulb!

I will spend $80 per bulb on reputation and word of mouth alone. When the masses start raving about the bulbs you have, I will be real quick to jump on that band wagon as well.

I tend to buy bulbs with great reviews .. reguardless of the price (within reason).

Keep in mind that just because the LOOK of the bulb is the right color, it doesn't mean that it's emitting the correct spectrum for healthy coral growth.

Really it takes 4-6 months IMO to start telling if a bulb is doing your corals any good... and that's a conservative time estimate.

and the flip side of the coin is, just because you spend top dollar on something, doesn't mean it's any better than the cheaper, no-name version.
i used to deliver motts apple juice. inside the plant, they manufacture motts apple juice and generic apple juice(no frills, acme brand, giant brand..yada yada yada) they all come out of the same vat. it's all the exact same juice. the only difference is the labels.
the same with certain cars. toyota corolla and geo prizm.
nissan quest and mercury villager. these are practically the same vehicle with different labels and a few minute appointments changed.

the name of the company that makes these bulbs shavo is speaking of is AquarMckzo.
i have two 20k's from that company on my tank now, and they are beautiful. my corals love me for them.
i challenge anyone to test these bulbs and prove inferiority. i'll pay for the bulbs.

the masses have been wrong before. i mean..take a look at public officials for example. they've all been voted in by the MASSES. 8O

I agree X.... I just checked a study and XM 10k was second in performance next to Iwasaki (some study online).

I wanted the white since I have two 96w actinics to offset the white a little.

Im not down on your bulbs at all. I like your tank and your innovation and willingness to break away from the masses to have the things you want.
You asked for a good reason why someone was willing $60+ on a MH bulb and I gave my reason in justifying why I spend as much as I do. The phoenix bulbs are getting rave review by some experienced reefers. I used them and I would think that my Tank thread speaks for itself.
When you start bragging about your amazing growth and color and show some pics to back it up and it impresses me I will then consider using the bulbs you have. Have you ever considered that the bulbs you are using are possibly coming from a small startup company and when they build a reputation the bulbs will then cost as much as the rest on the market. If thats the case you are surely getting a better deal than the rest of us. If you like the bulbs you have then you are doing well. Some reefers search for years and still cant seem to find the color and intensity that makes them happy. YOu were asking for a good reason to spend the extra and I gave you what I thought was a good one. Word of mouth means alot to me. I am a contractor and most of my work comes from referals. Not the yellow pages. Keep in mind. I have only heard you talk about your bulbs. I have heard very many people talk highly about the bulbs I am using.

Yes, I read consumer reports to see what the rest of America has to say about products before I buy alot of things. I research any large pruchase before buying it.

Actually, when your talking about messing with a ten thousand dollar fish tank. Or buying some no name car. Or buying anything....NO

On another note. The General rule of thumb for MH bulb replacement.

10K- 1 year
14K- 9 months
20k- 6 months
