few shots with d40

just got this new d40 for xmas!
i had a canon sd600 which took pretty decent shots IMO
but trying a new toy...and i am confused as ever...i dont know what im doing at all..the kit lens has no VR and seems like i got shaky hands..its hard to get a super clear shot..
tell me what you think of my first try

i like this shot where the background is blurred but dont know how i did it.. cali tort is still coloring up

great tank shots! i don't think you can get much better with the kit lens. like you said i've found the only way to get a clear shots close up is by being ultra steady- tripod would probably be best.

read up on kenrockwell.com about adjusting exposure compensation- you'll see how to brighten up those non-tank pics. he has a well written d40 userguide.

the colors the dslr cameras take is alot nicer then point and shoots though...look at this pic of AOG's...pretty vibrant and pretty close to the actual color...

i think it was holding down a button and turning a dial...

turn the upper dial to A, hit the info button, then turn the scroll wheel.. you'll see f change as you rotate the dial.. lower number.. more bokeh (background fuzziness)

understanding exposure by peterson is a great book explaining the relationship between iso, shutter speed, and aperture.

i tried that and in order to have a low (f) then distance is kinda far or else its not clear....i notice when i turn the zoom on the lens the (f) changes too...when i zoom out the (f) lowers...(f) is the arperture right?

there is a minimum distance you have to be in order for the camera to focus.

see the specs on the lens? f3.5 at 18mm and f5.6 at 55mm is wide open at those mm's..

hey dan...mine only goes to 3.5?

kamikazee...its the kit lens 18-55mm...i put the setting on macro and get as close as i can...but usually it wont take the shot because its out of focus
