i see the aperture is around f/4-5.6 which is about the same as my kit lens...
but i dont think thats a major concern considering i am looking for real closeup shots ..but i do notice the expensive macro lens are up to 105mm or so....maybe its not a true macro lens ...is that the difference?

i had the same questions it seems like the best lens is the nikkor 105mm micro but it costs $750 and is vibration reduced lens I don't think that feature will work with the d40 so its a waste of money for you others like jhale use the tamron 90 and I'm sure you saw his pics of GA

vr lenses work on the d40.....at least that's what kenrockwell's site indicates.

yea i believe the vr works with the d40 also
..just the non AF-S lenses cant AF on the d40 because no motor in the body...
evryone says i dont need a VR lense for macro...since the bests shots are taken on a tripod with a remote or timer

Autoponics: What made you go with the d40 instead of the d60? The price differential I believe is about $150 now

according to kenrockwell..he still reccomends the d40 over the d60..
but the price was what determined my decision...also was a xmas gift so had to consider the cost..but i think its more than enough for me...just need a few more lenses ..got mine for 309$ with the kit lens
