I was just wondering, might it be far fetched that knowing everything now a days is for a profit....what if some local stores around the area give discounts to "not technically broke" college students. In which I know for a fact that a lot of college students around the area are really big into this hobby.. since also it would show that some of the stores around the area that they do support kids going to school looking for further education..

No way in college I had a full time job off campus and a part time one on, I also had a full schedule. By the time you're in college you shouldn't worry about discounts you should worry about having a work ethic for after college. Get a full time job.

Unfortunately I do have a job..
Something very wrong with this statement  What's wrong with having a job? :fishhit:

If your hobby was modifying cars for recreational track racing, you'd want college-based discounts at Strauss Auto and Pep Boys? :biglaugh:

DUde college wasn't that far away for me I'm 32. I know how much college costsnowadays trust me.
Don't give me the parent BS I have a 3 year old and a 5 month old so I am nowhere near the College days for my kids.

I know how it feels. I had to drop out of my first school and go to a local school because of the costs and still needed to have 2 jobs.
My days off from my full time job were tuesdays and thursdays and I worked 10 hour days on Friday and Saturday there in addition to 8 hr days the other days and on my days off I worked 10 hr days at the part time job.
Stop looking for discounts they only hurt the local guy who is trying to compete with the big stores but he does them because he feels obligated to give discounts. He is the one who loses giving the discount not you for paying full price.

One, I know how the system works with pricing coming from the whole sale store to the retailers, I did take marketing and have gone to wholesale stores, it is upsetting as is. Trust me, I am not asking for a 20 dollar discount on a 30 dollar coral rock. Second, Im glad to see that a moderator of this site is telling a college student "if you're worrying about tuition, maybe a reef hobby is not in your best interest." I would have thought that if you would have passion for this hobby like I do, it would not matter if your the most broke person there is or hard strap for cash. If you love the hobby and not the buisness than it would justify that it shouldnt stop you from being in the hobby...

LOL! Being a moderator doesn't change the way I feel. If someone cannot afford to provide the best environment possible for a reef, a bird or a hamster, then they should seek another hobby and spare the animals.

And now that I think about it, hobbies of any nature, are best enjoyed when you're spending disposable income and not college tuition or your next meal.

Hey dude!
The way I see it is this. If you are strapped for cash do not go for a bare bottom SPS tank. Thats as expensive as it gets in the hobby. (Big skimmer, massive circulation)

If you do a fish only with live rock or a softie tank you will be better off. Rather than trying to get a discount from stores, which you will not, try buying used. Our For sale section is always packed with enough stuff to get cheap.

Why not start a Thread called budget reefing and get peoples ideas on the most cost effective way to have a marine tank.

Good Luck dude!!

now someone tells me this? no wonder I've only been eating ramen noodles the past year. :eat:

I guess your not going to get sympathy from reefers who are busting their a$$ to pay the bills and maintain a tank. I know it's an expensive hobby once you get deep into it. depending on the tank and what you keep you could do it on the cheap.
If you hang out on this board you won't need discounts from stores, have you checked the prices in our for sale section? there are some crazy deals every week!

I thought college was supposed to prepare you for life after college. Teaching responsibility, decision making, etc. If you are already sitting there with an empty bank account and a full reef, something is wrong. I'm with Dean on this one.
As for the discount, no way.
Go to the for sale/for trade area or want to buy. You'll start meeting the people from this site and I'm sure you'll see that some of them sell cheaper than any discount you'll get. If your "broke" and you insist on having brand new tunze's rather than used powerheads, that's your problem. Credit card debt isn't your friend.
