I have wanted to do a reef tank for years. I finally bought a Nanocube off craigslist. I was sooo excited and so happy. I was foing freshwater for years and figured i might as well try SW out.
I was out of a job at that time (and still am, i'm freelancing but not full time) and figured i deserved this little present to myself.
I went to go see the tank, and it seemed to be fully operational. I did notice the very sloppy DIY mods to the tank. They had placed 2 extra pc bulbs, and cut away at the splash gaurd, to place a HOB fuge/skimmer. I asked about the mods, and was told that they're fine, and that i'm actually getting a really good deal cause i'm actually getting more light for the same price. i took the tank, and i can't lie I was thrilled. I looked at it and couldn't believe i actually started on this new endeavor. I seriously just would look at empty, one night a sea slug popped out of the sand.....never saw it again.
I was broke and struggling, and had no idea how much Live rock was, or what it was.
I am part of aquariacentral and was luckily contacted by a member who sold me liverock for 2 dollars a pound. So i bought my live rock, and was thrilled. Everything seemed to be coming together. Then my lights went out.....
i had nowehre to turn really, and was told that it was the ballasts, and that, that tank was the habit of going out. Replacement ballasts were like 100 each. I only paid 100 for the tank. so i search, and realize that i can't afford to buy full ballast. Meanwhile I just spent money on the live rock, and was scared any hangers on might die due to lack of light, not to mention my slug friend who was now mia.
SO i search, and search and i tak eit to reef encounters, and realize i just need to get the central piece. I find it on ebay for decent price, but now my bill for the tank just keeps going up, and i have nothing to show for it. I contact nano tuners, and ask them their thoughts. I was told that the hood, can't be saved, and that they wouldn't even feel comfortable selling me mods,as that the hood, was too badly damaged.
my heart sunk, and i tried to contact the guy hoping for a return ( i had tried before, but figured i shoudl try again). Half of me wanted to go crash his face in, but my gf talked me out of it. I mean i did know where he lived. The only deals i found for the hood itself was 150-300, and i wasn't going to spend that in addition to everything else i spent.
My then gf and i spoke, and decided to it might be cheaper to just get a new tank. I told her my concerns when i was in the process of buying it, and she kind of convinced me to get it anyway, as i happen to stress these things a lot. She offered to get me a new tank if i can find one. I went back to cl, and found my current aquapod, transferred everything, and the rest is history. Oh get this, during the transfer a drop of saltwater hit my iphone on the home button......thing hasnt worked right since.
Below is my oringal post after i got my first tank. I think you can read my excitement lol.

SO i bought a saltwater tank.....what was i thinking?
ok,
I'll pretty much take everything you don't want.
That piece of live rock, that just throws off your aquascape a bit...give it to me
That fish that looked at u angry once...i'll take him
That piece of frag that grew just a lil too much....teach it humility by offering it to me.
...so i think i bit off a bit more than I can chew....
I bought an 24 gallon aquapod last night.
I pretty much have everything I need mechanically,
What I'm looking for is 15-20 ibs of live rock,
Any frags or corals, fish, shrimp, crabs, starfish
Honestly,
I would love some donations, but if you have some cheap prices, that would be great too.
I can pick up in Jersey, and in ny. I'm about ten minutes away form harlem.
I'd pay shipping for any frags or other items. My zip code 07666, i'm in nj.
let me know people.
