Timbo - did you look at that adoption site Awilda put up..they have a conure in Maspeth..but they want you to visit with the bird at least 2 times before they might accept you (and that's fine and should be done), then they want to visit your home first..and then they want $200 adoption fee for the bird and another 100 for the cage (I didn't get the impression that was optional, even if you already had a cage.
I don't know that some of the adoption places are worth it with strings like that & high adoption fees..especially in this case where you might get someone else's pet with an attitude (they even mentioned this particular conure likes to bite..)
But I do believe in adoption with cats & dogs - especially shelter animals, birds are a little tougher and young ones might be in the best interest of the new owners...at least they don't euthanize birds who aren't adopted
