Timbo - did you look at that adoption site Awilda put up..they have a conure in Maspeth..but they want you to visit with the bird at least 2 times before they might accept you (and that's fine and should be done), then they want to visit your home first..and then they want $200 adoption fee for the bird and another 100 for the cage (I didn't get the impression that was optional, even if you already had a cage.

I don't know that some of the adoption places are worth it with strings like that & high adoption fees..especially in this case where you might get someone else's pet with an attitude (they even mentioned this particular conure likes to bite..)

But I do believe in adoption with cats & dogs - especially shelter animals, birds are a little tougher and young ones might be in the best interest of the new owners...at least they don't euthanize birds who aren't adopted :(

Thanks for all the input. In the process of researching and visiting stores I could get to, I've fallen for a white bellied caique. They're a bit pricey, but I think the investment is definitely worth it long term.

I would love to adopt but I'm not in a great position to do so right now. I want this to be a good experience for my fiancee, it's going to be her first time handling a bird this size and I want one that will be able to socialize well with her. I'm not saying a bird thats adopted wouldn't but it's going to be difficult. I've checked a bunch of sites and most of the adoptable birds are too far out of my reach. Between visits, adoption fees and the likes, it'll be just the same as buying a bird.

Does anyone have any experience with White bellied Caiques?

Introducing Pickles..This is a picture of him enjoying his mirror way to much. Rolls right over, starts massaging his head, and pretty much falls asleep.

:bump:

So Pickles for the past 7 months has been a complete joy to have and given his new LARGE and I mean LARGE living quarters we decided to get another baby bird. Pickles was DNA'd and is a boy, so we got a girl, her name is Bella.

She arrived today via Continental Airlines from Utah, she's a country girl. She reminds us a lot of Pickles and his first day home with us. Here are a few pics of her enjoying some of PIckles toys.

Congrats Kris, Bella is as adorable as Pickles :)
Even with clipped wings, I would never have the courage to take a bird outdoors, I'm too much of a worry-wart..lol
No doubt with you and Michelle for 'parents', Bella & Pickles are being spoiled rotten ;)

Are we hoping for eggs someday in the future?

Thanks!!! The leash is pretty safe (but nothings 100%)

Oh yes they are lol, spoiled rotten is probably an understatment. I can't wait for them to meet each other, they're gonna go nuts.

Eggs? errrrr hopefully not, we're going to do everything we can to discourage mating once they reach maturity. Maybe some day, but not anytime soon lol.

Bella is 8 months old and Pickles is 1 year 4 months old now.

Adam, we looked at craiglists, multiple rescues, etc and ended up with this "older" baby. She was supposed to be taken by another family taht backed out last minute and ended up with us.
