Kris- try out parrots of the world on sunrise highway in rockville center. Theyve been there since I was a kid and my dad used to take me in there. On the weekends they let the birds out of their cages and into a glass enclosure and will let you and if you have any, your kids interact with them. I used to love the place when I was young and been meanin to visit. They always and from what I hear still do keep the place very clean.

May be worth the trip

I used to love the tucan in the front was cool as heck

better buying from someone who raise's them if you can. reason i say this is alot of the people who raise them hand hold them alot, and start off being feed from hand, my ex-wifes grandmother use to raise bird around 30 breeds and as babies they would get held hwile being feed at first, i had a sun conure, that i could take out of the cage and walk around with, it talked and so on, the one thing with birds is you need to get them out of the cage regularly to help keep them calm, otherwise they revert quickly back to biting the crap out of you and conures dont have a soft bite { found out hard way }

The painted conure I saw today (they had 3 of them) looked like this guy..markings were the same right down to the little red spot on the top of the wing :)
They were all young too Kris, so room for growth :)

(note - I texted Kris a picture of him today. Saw the birds at The Pet Center - formerly The Pet Barn in Franklin Square when I stopped in to say Hi there)

You should look into adoption. There are so many birds that are given up and now with the economy the way it is there are even more. Parrots are huge commitments so make sure you do research and then do some more. Think about it long and hard before you commit to getting a parrot. Adopt if you decide to go forward with it. Birds are awesome pets and I love my cockatoo like a child but she can drive me absolutely nuts at times. Have had her for seven years now and she will probably live another fifty plus years!!!!
