doesnt this only apply to a single stage paint without clear coat?

No stage- there are up to 7 layers of clear coat over urethane paint- the paint thats used for the last 25 years+ since getting away from lacquer and enamel. When you wet sand the paint you use 1500 grit sandpaper and only go down into the top coat of the clear- once it has a nice flat white look to it with no spots(orange peel) or any imperfections- you use a good glazing and polishing system to buff it out then you flash wax it and the paint looks pretty much factory, UNLESS The clear is baked to where its peeled off the paint like you see sometimes but as long as the clears still intact you can wet sand and buff it no prob.

Oh I see that is interesting. Im not much of an autobody guy, but I do know how to polish my car with the oribtal buffer I have. I know that on my evo which had single stage paint, It really was badly oxidized from the sun. I just polished it with an agressive compound with my buffer and it looked good as new. I wasnt sure if this applied to regular paint as well.

this paint hasnt been around for almost 20 yr's, wet sanding depending on how bad the clear coat is depends on the grit used, when i did custom paint jobs i started with 1000 and went up to 2500, with 1500 and 2000 inbetween, and there is only 2 layers of clear on fzctory paint and most custom paint job only use 3 any more then that the car has to be store in a temp controlled room otherwise the clear will crack, you dont need that much clear, i use to put 4 coats because i would sand down 1 of the coats

and there is no such thing as dealership paint, we use axle nobel paint and their system, put paint code into comp and it give's the variance's, most colors have between 9-13 color variances, depends where the car was put together, hard to believe p96-m can be several different colors

To be honest i wouldnt wet sand the car. There is only about 3mils of paint on a paint job and if it is that sun faded it's probably shot you will have the risk of sanding through and now are screwed and have to get a paint job. try a clay bar first then seal, then wax. the only paint jobs that really come back from sunfade are single stage and honda stopped that in the early 90's and the only colors were white and black.

and if you do try to wet sand use 2500 wet/dry and stay about 2" away from all edges, seams and grooves.
