And the weight discriminations on flight attendants has been illegal since the 1980's.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_attendant#Discrimination

Don't be silly, when is the last time you seen a 350 pound flight attendant? That job requires the person to be in certain physical condition and size, you can't be helping people getting out of the plane if two of you can't stand in the isle ways together. Same for age, I have seen many "older" flight attendants getting the pink slip because they can't push 80 pounds for 20ft as many airline requires for part of the physical condition test.

So you think the airline is discriminating if a 300 pound person that can't walk down a 15" wide isleway wants a job as a flight attendant?

AnywaySo basically you've looked at people who aren't very well educated and who already don't have a societal pre-dispensation to do well at math. Then you say that all youth can't even do a simple test. My statistics professor would have been very angry at you.

Dude for starters his test is simple simple simple math. Addition and Subtraction. He isnt asking these people to do Quantum Molecular Physics or Thermal Dynamics. Its just hey this cost 10 bucks I gave you a twenty what do I get back. Frankly you dont need to be a Rhodes Scholar to figure that out. Secondly, I am 28 and I even thought at 22 that most of my generation wasnt that bright.

Because sex discrimination laws allow for instances where a hostile work environment will be created.

So you are saying a male asking a woman her cup size and hovering around the dressing room offering to lend a hand to female clientele could not be construed as a hostile?

That has lawsuit written all over it, Bikinisalt is smart to only have females filling that role.

Your right about that...

Payroll, fat, ugly, yellow teeth, etc have nothing to do with this. This is basic math and few questions on situations that play out in everyday life at a retail store and if you can't answer these correctly then you should not be behind a cash register and dealing with customers...

Because sex discrimination laws allow for instances where a hostile work environment will be created. There was a case of a transvestite guy who wanted to use the ladies room a few years ago I think. They didn't want him to because they still considered him a guy, so they wanted to send him to his own bathroom like 2 floors away if I remember right. I don't know what the outcome of the trial was though.

And yea not being able to fit down an isle is more of a physical limitation/safety issue than discrimination. Same thing for amusement park ride requirements.

And wanting only women to help other women buy bikinis is what? Unreasonable?

I think a lot of people are being distracted by the "women" part. I'm afraid to say that if Bikini was hiring men as well, the exam results would be no different. I'm a high school science teacher, and I can tell you its astounding to see the decline in ability of students over these past few years...I'm shocked by the number of students, age 14 and 15, who can't take a simple average in a bio lab. Reading comprehension? Its just words....they only see the individual words, and can't put them together to understand context. Why do they graduate with so little knowledge? Its the new "high" standards. When you require all students to pass certain tests in order to graduate, the tests get designed to make them pass. My subject is biology...but NY State no longer teaches biology...maybe the only state in the country to NOT teach biology. In its place we have "Living Environment"...kind of like a "highlights in modern biology"...Ecology, modern genetics, some evolution, and experimental design are taught. No more mendelian genetics, no plants or animals at all, unless they are in a food chain or an invasive species...barely any human physiology. And the exam? the passing grade is 39 out of 85 points. That translates into something like 45% will give a kid a passing grade of 65. From what I hear, Math A is only 29 out of 85. And the state says the new standards are working.....Sorry for the rant. Sometimes a guy's gotta vent..............

We need to get back to the days when the teacher would whoop your a$$ if you couldnt add 5 plus 6. In my case it was a nun and she had the ill 3 foot reach (yard stick).

Obvisously the No Child Left Behind laws are not working because the topic of discussion was and is still the fact that people, not just youth, cant do this simple test. Now of course because this is embarrassing, the person changes topic and starts speaking of racism, sexism, facism and any word you can attach an ism to. Now how about we stop threathening BikiniSalt with pretend law suites we will never file, trying to figure out where he lives so you can pour copper medication into his tank or likening his womans apparel shop to a cotton farm and just grab a beer with him and do what we do best... **** back and laugh a stupid people. Obvisously they are ones who created the NCLB Law.

I think the major points of bikini are that the youth, at least the ones who applied to his job, are having a math and attitude issue.

I would not assume bikini is offering close to minimum because I cannot find anywhere in this thread he mentioned the wages he is offering. Oftenly, when it comes to hiring, many people preassumed low pay get low end workers. Remember my hiring some youth that hang out in my cafe for moving? One of the earliest assumption is that they are not paid well. I am not sure what some of you expects, but I consider my god sister's cashier job a good pay for ~$3000 cash monthly. My personnal experience is that higher pay get a larger pool of applicants that may qualified highly while lower pay will get smaller pool of applicants that are qualified. In my own thread about hiring movers, I concluded that the actual factor that affects the performance is the willingness of the individual worker not necessarily the pay unless it is way out of the fair market value.

I am not sure if age matters in terms of simple math. But I do agree with bikini that expectations of some of his applicants, at the ones he pointed out are a problem-they may be beauty queens and kings but Bikini wants someone to able to handle changes of cash. No matter who you are, if you fail that question you don't belong to that job. He has not mentioned whether he needs a good looking worker as a sale person, so I would not presume he secretly desires one either(may be he really wants one but there is no proof of assumimg that.) I found that not only youth expect a job and a pay higher than their qualifications. I recently have some workers who are adults having the issue. Not sure if this is a trend of NYC or not.

Attitude issues do change a lot in last 10 years. bikini mentioned about one applicant's "go about your own business" I found that not only youth(as he described) has this problem. Our society seems turning to this too-our president, politician and men in the street, all doing "hell with the others, I am doing it anyway" more and more often than say 10 years back. Do the youths learn it from us adults??? Hmmm??

Bikini

You may not feel like this matters but what kind or store are you hiring people to work at?

That actually makes much more of a difference in the type of applicants you get, and directly relates to the education of people your hiring.

If you need extra help especially in the fitting rooms count me in!!

:lol2:

Seriously todays youth is bad, some can't do basic math, read or write properly and have no respect for others ant their belongings, but demand respect for themselves. And most of them can't work anything but a computer or a video game with their hands. Ask them how many bathrooms they have cleaned and they will look at you and tell you none without batting an eyelash.

Don't you think someone who handles money, behind a cash register should have a basic understanding of simple math (+/-) ?

That's where the education related too.

Well I have to continue later someone just waiting on this computer.

Correct... I am speaking about today's youth primarily. To be honest, which is nobody's business, but I don't give a sh**. We start someone with no experience at $8.50HR an hour and with little experience at $13.50HR, with quarterly increases and after six months we include them in our medical and let me not forget we also give out X-mas bonuses. This is also part-time, not full time...

Business

If your hiring someone to in retail you can reasonable expect them to add subtract and give change.

But in retail you cant resonalbly expect people who to be proficent in math, id beleive that their lack of education and proficency in education is the reason why they are applying to work in retail. Most of the brain in retail is in management and store owner. There are many exceptions to the rules like college students or older retired people or people who have lost their jobs.

In your business Bikini it must be even harder to find someone that fits your bill, because of the bias that a business like yours faces.

You would be surprised how many young people can't do simple math and your right about finding someone who fits the bill.

Anyway I did hire a potental candidate today. In fact she pass very little of the test, but she had a good first impression and a good understanding, so I am giving a shot...

I know the answer to the "legal debate" in this thread, but if I told you the answer, I'd have to bill you :) I wonder, does Scores have a legal obligation to hire an equal number of male and female strippers? Discuss!

However, to correct one thing I saw in this thread -- a business in NY city or state can be sued for discrimination under the NY city and state human rights laws, which apply to any business that employs 4 or more (generally not including owners) -- the 25 employee limit is for discrimination suits under federal law.

So basically it is okay for a female to get undressed trying on stuff and for a male to be watching and assisting her in the fitting rooms of female orientated Lingerie stores? I don't think sooooo.....
