Can anyone recommend a open party boat ( or even a not too expensive charter ) out in Suffolk that still goes out? A few buddies and I would like to do some winter fishing but can't find anyone out here that still goes.

All the Charter Boats this time of year will run you $700-$800

Party boats are running for mackerel and blackfish, and some do the offshore seabass trips.

Try Capt Al and the Superhawk in Pt. Lookout
Also check the Capt Lou fleet if Freeport.

Thanks, I figured that charters will be too much ( unless I can fill a boat ) but I couldnt find any party boats using The Fisherman or Noreast that were going out now except for the Shinnecock Star. Would you be able to give me any pointers on pier or shore fishing in the area? I'm in Stony Brook and new here.

I did talk to the Shinnecock Star and that was the one option I found so far. The price is decent considering the length of the trip ( $100 or 110 for 10 hr trip ) for cod, blackfish, etc. but I dont know if my friends want to spend that much so I'm looking to see if there are any shorter options. I saw a couple of boats with 3 am trips and emailed them - am waiting for a response.

What about shore fishing and freshwater fishing? Any tips there? I emailed the Superhawk and its sister ship but their emails bounced back so I will have to try calling tomorrow. The Superhawk website says there is a special trip on MLK Day 3 am to 6 pm. I might just try that if nothing else pans out.

Jejton, forget about surf fishing(saltwater) this time of year. Most shore water temps are pretty cold and there really is no species of fish to catch at the moment. I'm sure there is something to catch in freshwater but I'm not much of a freshwater guy ;)
The blackfishing kind of sucks right now. Unless you have much experience fishing for them, you probably won't catch any. I would suggest that you try to get on an offshore seabass trip. You will catch a ton of BIG seabass with cod, pollack, ling, bergal, and other stuff :)

i'd be down for doing the MLK day special...as long as they dont change their prices ( which these boats keep doing for some reason without updating their websites ) but res are required and they only take 25 people - 3 am to 6 pm trip.

Go to Captree State Park on the southshore of LI or go to Sunken meadow beach on the northshore in Long Island Sound. You can go to Wading River futher north east of the LI Sound or Montaulk Point which is farther. Those are the places i go to during the fishing season. Right now is Blackfish season and to catch those, u use small fiddler crabs.
I prefer to surf cast since you arent guaranteed catching fish on a boat that you pay for. Surfcasting is free and if u dont catch anything, its not like you paid.

I took a boat out of captree in november and had a great time but asking some people around there i was told the shore fishing is not good because all the party boats and crowds have exhausted the inshore area. I did do Wading River last year in the summer and really liked it but is it worth a try in the winter? I heard of Sunken Meadow Park and want to try it out in the spring. Thanks for the tips.

It has been awhile since I did some surfcasting, but Sunken Meadow is not bad. South of you is Smiths Point State Park which has some good fishing on both the ocean and the bay side.

Well i say its best to try as many places as you can. I plan on trying many different areas to catch fish. I just hope i have free time to do so on weekends. As for this winter, if it was 50 or 60 degress on a weekend, i'll still go out but unfortunatly, it was 60 during the weekdays and i worked.
As for Captree, even thought the party boats come and go and supposedly ruins the inland fishing, i still manage to catch a good amount of Porgys and Sea Bass with occasional Blackfish/Fluke/Skate. For 6 hours or so forth, its tons of fun just trying for me.

The Sea Otter ( http://www.seaotterfishing.com/main ) out of Montauk has open boat trips during the winter. They target cod, blackfish, pollock, hake, and ling. I've gone on a few striped bass fishing trips with them in the fall and always produce. Never tried the winter fishing but I hear it's good. Gotta dress the part though.

This is a great website for L.I. fishing reports:
