Racism at Fishtown, NY

Thanks for the support all. As Alex can attest, this came as a big surprise to us as we just conversing about our enthusiasm for the hobby in front of one of the member's car until we were rudely interrupted. To be honest, I admit i've been guilty of visiting the store at least once each week or every other week. I met and have known several of the disgruntled employees there over the years, some whom have left and few who have remained. I was always told how horrible the owners were but now, it's obvious that I would never step foot into that store nor make another purchase from them again. If I can get the truth out to every current, new member and non-members to boycott Fishtown, that would be my ultimate revenge.

Alex and nycpassat, I am extremely sorry to hear of your experiences. I know exactly the attitude that the woman Kathy emits everytime a customer walks into Fishtown. It is unbelievable to even read that she had the nerve to shout out racist slurs at you two. It is evident how much the business has suffered ever since she was introduced to the business. If she is that dumb enough to blame Asians for FT suffering, especially and ironically while they are located in Northern Blvd, Flushing, then it might be an easier solution to just disregard her comments and her sheer existence, since it should not hold any significance in any recognized society. If signs of all the old time employees leaving the store, poor quality and mistreatment of livestock are not enough signs to stop shopping there then this definitely is the final indication that Fish Town should no longer be a store worth visiting. I will not be supporting a store that will make me feel discriminated against. I will be supporting the boycott of Fishtown and suggest looking into getting the media involved in this matter. It is just not right for any individual to treat another human being the way you guys described it. It's about time the owners of Fish Town saw more direct consequences due to Kathy's actions. For crying out loud, she bags up fish at a pet store, what even gave her the temerity to speak that way in the first place? I call for a public apology from the store itself to Alex, nycspassat, and the rest of the MR community for their behaviors, especially if nothing is done which will further prove that they support Kathy's racist point of views.

Sorry to hear what happened to you at FT Alex & NYpassat what a disgusting showing of ignorance from this woman's.
I walked in there once last year and left when I saw their disregard for the livestock. Awilda & I must have spoken 5 times a day during the time they treated her so badly and I've never gone back, nor will I.

MR should continue getting the word out about this place and I agree that a news agency should be told of what happened to our members so the word can be spread to everyone that might have a thought about going there.

Wow, this is unbelievable. Being Korean American and my mom still lives about 5 blocks away from FT, I visit that store maybe once a month. But I will never go back there again until the new ownership. I am just glad I read this thread.

I've only been there once and actually witnessed an employee/employer "joking" around in a very offensive manner with an asian american customer. It made me feel extremely uncomfortable, but the customer held up his ground against this ignorant idiot. I guess my experience is not unique. Anyway, I wasn't impressed by the store. Why go there when you can go to a fabulous store in CT that will knock your socks off with both quality and service.

They are not only ignorant but the store itself sucks. I was there twice to exchage frags with a fellow MR member and I wasn't impressed at all. They LR tank looks like a black water tank from the Amazon!!! All of their fishes were either sick or beat up.

I'm thinking an undercover, hidden video, sting operation. We setup a transaction and record the ensuing tirade. This tape can then be distributed to various media outlets, particularly local Asian community newspapers, as well as posting it youtube.

" Otherwise they will just think business sucks for other reasons.

Calling the store to complain will get you no where unless your lucky enough to get the owner, her father(Mike). Maybe then, and then again who knows??????

Kedd, I don't blame you for not wanting ** to be mentioned in the same thread. And as far as I am concerned ft is a place that should not be visited ever. But people always look to save $$$, and as long as they think they are saving they will continue to shop there.
What they don't realize is that the quality of the merchandise is inferior to what can be found here on MR, and other local shops that a few of our members have been opening up for the same prices. Sometimes for even less.
By the way, call me crazy, but we are actually providing them with FREE ADVERTICEMENT with this thread unfortunately.

What is wrong with us anyway? Why are we not supporting our Vendors & Buddies here on MR? Come on people we can make a difference! We need to support our own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hug:
