If you have AT&T already, they can transfer your SIM to work with the iPhone for a fee, but you'll need to add the data plan as well if you don't already have it.
For the US, the main reason to unlock is to be able to use it on tmobile and be able to travel to other countries and use the phone using pay as you go sims.
rangehatIt's only sort-of-free. There's a store in Charleston that sells used CDs and DVDs. They take used stuff from anyone who sends it in and based on the value of stuff you send them you can get an iPod (they got the iTouch ones), an iPhone, games, etc. Their web-site is www.feedyouripod.com. I went through my DVD collection and found a lot of things I really didn't want anymore, so I sent it in on Monday and today they called to confirm that they I wanted the iPhone. So it's technically free because I'm not paying anything now, just the shipping of the DVDs to them. Of course I paid for all these DVDs originally, but that was so long ago it doesn't count.
