I've been diving for years....I also agree you don't need to be a strong swimmer to be a good diver!
Like was mentioned- you can swim the laps any way you feel comfortable.
Two students in my class did doggy paddle their way to certification ! :biglaugh:
Speaking of certification....which is it-NAUI or PADI (Put Another Dollar In)?!

Also a heads up (not to hijack your thread)....
At the end of the month the Gulf Stream should be hugging the NE coast here,
and it's a good time to catch baby tropicals along the shore!
You can find angles, butterflys, triggers......it's amazing.
Believe it or not, I've caught tons at some Rockaway beaches, in 5 feet of water at the base of the jettys!!

I was thinking mid September - we would have to check with village divers to see what was open. Their web site says 4 to a class, but there were 6 the last time I took it - yes, I have to take it again.

I did not complete my 4 open water dives in the required time. The first trip was rained out and the second had a messed up reservation. That is why I want to go to Dutch Springs to make sure I actually get certified this time.

BTW - I floated most of my 8 laps :) But I can tread water like nothing else :)

Also, the wet suit can be rented. I think this is a good idea so that you can try out differnt kinds before you buy one.

Thanks for filling in all the details Eric!

If you are still interested, please post again, and I will start a list at the top of the page.

I did some certiffication dives at dutch springs quarry. great place to learn as they have platforms in the water at different depths. ther's also a submerged airplane. Defiinately the best place for a certification dive in the area!

I dove the Black Warrior off the Rockaways for my first open water dive. Definately a very easy dive.

People who are scared off by the strong swimmer recommendation, don't be. I would definitely NOT consider it to be for strong swimmers only. I taught PADI for eleven years. It is VERY easy!!! Don't pass up this opportunity because you feel you can't swim. Go give it a try!!
