...and then it rained for a whole week!!!! and there was very little picture-taking :(

but the last two days have been gorgeous, and we were out and about - did
Sea World Sunday and today got back to the beach, where a guy was fishing and caught this:

he taught us how to hold it. we held and touched a shark for a sec before he threw it back in and it swam away!!!!!

about a half hour later, he caught a black-tipped shark, which we also got to touch. it was even smaller than the hammerhead.

the hammerhead was very cool - it kept moving its head to try to see us better, i think. It was trippy, really, to see this animal up close and out of the water.

...and we're in there swimming with them!

there was also a pod of dolphins, but they were too far out to get a good pic of them, at least with my little camera...

tell ya what, Ken and I (the guy holding the shark) had a nice long convo after he threw the hammerhead back in - he had a 50 gal tank that he stocked entirely with stuff he had caught. triggers, puffers, whatever he would find -

he told me that once he caught a juvenile grouper - maybe 6 inches. he put it into his tank and within a day, it had eaten about half the other fish in the tank. yeah, that fish went back into the ocean that day.

he says he catches sharks almost every day, but always throws them back.

the hammerhead gives us a look before swimming off... we seriously jumped back when he put this guy back in!

Cool pics, especially the shark. You're not really supposed to handle sharks of that size because they are made up of soft cartilage and even when they aren't flailing to get away their muscle twitches can cause internal bleeding or rip their own cartilaginous skeleton apart. We use big nets when we are acclimating them to tanks, it's the best way to support their entire body. Just incase anyone was planning on starting a new career as a shark wrangler.

you know, lfsmarineguy brings up a point i was really upset about when he held the shark - he was holding REALLY tight to this animal, and I could see that he did it b/c this animal was wriggly and has a huge mouth full of tons of razor-sharp teeth, but it was too rough. the shark's gills were extruding a bit, or it was just plain bleeding, and i think that it will be somewhat miraculous if the animal survived -- my only hope is that he became food for some animal higher up on the food chain. I was really upset by this, but was trying not to think about it.

still... you're absolutely right.

and i kept the kids out of the water for a bit after he went back in - if i had been treated that way, i would TOTALLY have take off some toes on my way back into the deep!

Well, the laundry is almost finished, the car is nearly packed, the girls are eating a late breakfast, and i have only to go through the house once more and then pack up the laptop - and then we're on the road again....

we drive today from North Florida to just outside D.C. Tomorrow we celebrate the birth of my new niece, and by 3:00 we'll be on the road to Pittsburgh for the annual family reunion. We'll be making our way back to NYC Monday.... Keep cool and I'll "see" you all when we get back!

Well, we're back home!!!

and the sand has a HUGE patch of nice, bright purple algae... and while I was gone, the aptasia made a serious come back...

sigh.

it is soooo good to be home, though. as soon as the unpacking is done and we've gone shopping for food and all of that, i'll post the last of the pictures. the last leg of the trip was to Pittsburgh for the annual family reunion.

do you know how much harder it is to drive to pittsburgh from here than to florida? I'm not talking distance, i'm talking - one FLAT highway all the way to my parents' house as opposed to tons of tiny roads over and through mountains to pittsburgh. driving to WPA is HARD WORK!

It is SO good to be home again. :)

stay tuned for the last pics.
