Horrible, that's what it comes down to living here. Just visited my friend in North Carolina who's mortgage is only $480 per month on a beautiful house. Makes me think how I want to live my life. Struggling to compete with everyone here in the northeast or live a great life somewhere else without the worry....

Con Ed can provide service which leaves tens of thousands of people without power for days at a time, yet they are pushing for a 36% rate increase... and they will get it.
The water people are going to raise their rates 11% because 10% of people don't pay their water bill... and they will get it.
None of that money will go to the guys in the street working hard for a living. It goes to the top execs.
NYPD has reduced crime and proved itself year after year and time after time.
They do things wrong. Everyone does. They are put in situations that most people could not imagine. But the money will never be put into their pockets and stories like this will continue.
They say that G.W. Bush hates everyone that is poor. Bloomberg hates everyone that isn't rich and he is chasing them out of the city as fast as he can.

I would like to ask that officer a few questions!!!

  1. Why is he sending his daughter to private school?
  2. Why is he having a 4th child?
  3. Why don't you move to a cheapper place?
etc............

I am sure your friend's house is beautiful and he's only paying $480 a month for the mortgage but I am also sure that he doesn't make as much as if he was working in NYC.

I am a huge advocate for the NYPD, all service related sectors for NYC and yes, they are grossly underpaid for the type of service they provide - it is heresy!

My issue with this story, though, is that having 3 children on THAT salary is not a smart decision - I know money shouldn't drive how many children you want to have but there is a breaking point no?

Sad nonetheless that NYC can't take the $9 tolls from the VZ (which was paid off years ago - maybe even 15 yrs) to take care of those who take care of thier city!

Heresy!

Yes you need to ask yourself if you can afford to have another child before planning on having one(but sometimes things happen :bunnies:), I agree, yes there is a great retirement at 20 years, Yes maybe he should move to a smaller place, yes maybe he should send his kids to public school, and yes maybe the surrounding counties pay more than the city. But let me ask this, why has it taken NYC 3 years to settle a contract? They say they don't have the money but then they come up with a surplus for the fiscal year and then want to pay people to get jobs, go to school, go to the doctors appointments all things they should be doing anyway.

I think everyone is missing the whole point of the article/letter. I don't think this officer exists. If he does I think things may be blown a little out of proportion. Do you know how much overtime you have to do to take home that amount at a 2 year pay step?

Steve I agree the NYSP comment was absolutely out of line. Here's why I say it is so sad.

The PBA took this example to try and help their side of the contract negotiations. When in essence it backfires on them because the emotional plea heard here is nothing because the city is locked in binding arbitration with the PBA in PERB. Nobody is going to go out tomorrow and demand a pay raise for the police department but the police officers. Why? Because there is no union in the police union, everyone is afraid of losing their detail if they open their mouth. Remember one thing, Top base pay for a NYC police officer is 59,900, That is 3rd year pay for some departments and first year pay for others and NYC is not the safest big city because Rudy and Mike are out there telling people they can't do things, the cops are, these guys take credit for all the hard work.

The Subways and buses are safer to travel on than ever but that's because of the drivers, mechanics and the guys working in the tunnels on the tracks not because Bloomy And Rudy G were doing those things but they take credit for it.

Fire prevention is working because Firefighters are doing inspections of buildings, issuing citations for fire hazards and because they are out there educating people about fire safety. Bloomy's 3 second blurb about change your smoke detector batteries doesn't do squat, the guys wearing those heavy coats and air packs do.

The city is clean because of the people on the garbage trucks and the people driving the sweepers, HA if you think Bloomy would even think about even picking up a public waste basket you're nuts. But the city counsel votes themselves raises because they work hard. Like I said the city wants to give money to people for doing things they should be doing anyway. Where is the logic? Both the city and the unions are wrong and the people of the city and the people who work for the city suffer for it, not the Mike Bloombergs of the city, the John Smiths do.

Yeah but brendan, we run into a different problem here. Having worked in both the NYPD and FDNY, I can tell you that 90% of each job does not live in the city and cannot vote for the mayor, city council or any elected officials for that matter. The people screaming the hardest for more can't really say a word.
I live in the city and I will tell you flat out that I look down on those who don't and tell me that MY property taxes should go up.
Remember, I pay Con Ed, Water, parking, living expense and the joy of knowing that my school district sucks. But no one stands behind me on this fight, because they are too busy whining about it in the kitchen or on their way back out onto the Island.

I'm part of the 90%. Your taxes shouldn't go up, They have a surplus, they should pay. Chris what about all of those apartments you go to on ambulance jobs where they have 52 inch lcd tv's and PS3's and XBOX 360's and sound systems that make some clubs look bad, computers etc.... then when you ask them for their ID they pull out a public benefit card? We are gonna start to pay those people to go to school and the doctor. We need to do that? I run into buildings after people who just shot someone, been doing it for 9 years, and will do it for 11 more and maybe then some you run into buildings that are caving in or are burning down, everyone else is running away, we run toward it, and that money should be earmarked for someone else to get a job and keep it? C'mon dude. You wanna have a real surplus start taking count of the people out there who get money and don't deserve to get money and then after you start holding them accountable for themselves should you raise taxes. I think if you did that you'd be saved from a few years of tax increases.
