Is it possible for this site to create a new chat room exlclusively for marine talk?

Can some one set up a chat room on this site that is just for reef talk or fish or anything about this subject matter?

Not sure who could do that but it would be great!

Every time I go in reefgraffitti everyone is chatting about drinking, or hanging out etc. this is all good and well but would love to have a live room with members helping members with reef stuff. Maybe one for general chat and one for reef chat. Every time I ask a question In a room I break up some conversation about last weekends party, or countless happy faces, rather than reef talk. Thas all good and should still have a place, just a room for both

in every chat room across the globe it is hard to be heard while the focus of the convo is centered on a certain subject...as in any, u have to deal with it or like T says, use the threads. I dont believe MR can accomodate every individuals needs.

That's what the entire site (except the Nudibar) is geared towards :scratch:

Our version of a chat room was named the Reef Graffiti for just that reason...quick shoutouts to anyone watching. Occasionally, valuable reefing information is exchanged, but the buffer for the graffiti is only about 1 day...making it unsearchable and close to useless to anyone who missed the conversation. With that said, your suggestion has already been a topic of discussion among the administrators & moderators of this site. Stay tuned :wink1:

I understand exactly how you feel. It is tuff when we have a question we would like an answer to, and we have to sit & wait until someone decides to read, and answer the post especially when we feel that it is urgent.

And yes I get what T & S are saying as well.

Deano, I know you can't please all the people all of the time, but LandFear & I will stay tune. The few times I have been to the ReefGraffiti I have found the same as LF. I guess I am a dinosaur as my children call me,lol.
To each his own, but I got the feeling the RG was for the party animals.:grouphug:

We had a chat room before and nobody every used. Also if you have a chat room, to talk about reef and fish related items, you're not going to have everyone in the chat room. So unlike a thread, where everyone can see it and reply to it, you're going to have only a small amount of people replying to your questions in a chat room, and it mayn't be the more experience people doing the replying.

If you do need a quick response to a problem you can always post it in RG and someone will either shoot you an answer or tell you to make a thread where people can respond to you.

I've looked at / participated on chats a bit lately - decided to see what it's like and what it's good for. I can tell you that I've had conversations about my (and others') kids, about our tanks -- about aptasia and about other pressing issues -- about death/God, and just some good old 'gettin' ta know ya type stuff. I think it's a great place, and it is whatever we make it to be. It all depends on who's there and what your agenda is.

Don't be afraid to break into a conversation with a tank question - chatters on this site are ready for that, too!

I have to agree with Marrone..basically if nobody is in the chat room, nobody will answer you anyway. RG is it's own entity and you can luck into an answer on there..or talk about anything.

If I have something that's super urgent, I'll either fire off a RB to someone I trust to answer correctly or pick up the phone and call a reefing friend.
..can also use the title 'urgent' in your post on the boards...

Where the heck am I when those convos are taking place?
& who's not inviting me to partys!!!!

Sure we get silly there...but there's always reef talk on the RG.

I've seen plenty of reef topics being discussed in RG before. Just ask and ask nicely sometimes more than once and you will get an answer eventually.

I have no problem with drinking or beer or whatever, im a freakin bartender for profession and spend most of my day talkin about stuff like that, its just when im in hear im trying to get info or hear others live problems or try to give some info I have learned

People dont be so defensive, this is my opinion and my experience. Im not lying or trying to insult people,just stopped in there on a few occassion and found this to be the case. Devious, im not lying or tyring to be rude, just take a step back a note the amount of conversations on countless other topics. This is great, but just like the site moves questions from "advanced reef" because its not appropriate, same should apply here.

If you have a question ask it, if it doesn't get answered ask it again until it does the RG scrolls by quickly but people do answer questions in there. I just had 3 questions answered in the last 10 minutes all reef related.

the greatest problem with this type of communication (internet posts / chatting) is that there is no body language or tone of voice to use a context for written response. There is no way to tell the emotional status of the writer...

it's a good idea if every time one reads a post, one gives the benefit of the doubt, and tries to read it not as defensive/offensive, but in any other (positive) way possible.

I feel like this thread has been a good conversation - lots of opinion-sharing. There are folks who have posted who use RG and like it, who use RG and don't love it, and who haven't really used RG... and i think we've all learned from this thread...

i don't think anybody is angry or annoyed (at least, that's the way I choose to read these posts...) -- we're just sharing.

I think that what makes this site amazing is that it's a community of folks who are interested in sharing, supporting each other and in helping each other out - with tanks and also with life.

Enjoy it and look on the positive side whenever you can!

p.s. - i hope (please!) you don't think i'm being preachy - I just want to keep it friendly!

If RG was only for reef questions...nobody would be on it. If you have a question do a search. If you can't find the answer then post the question.

You totally dis-regarded Deanos' post as to what the RG was intended to be & also ignored active RG users tell you different.

Like stated the was already a chat, while we had the RG.....& it was not used.

In the RG you're allowed interrupt.
Just join in & stop feeling like a loner.

Phil, I don't think LandFear was bashing RG. LF admitted being to RG only a few times, as well as I did, and I know I wasn't bashing RG. I know those that use RG more frequently know that what LF and I thought RG is for is incorrect. I know that now that so many have come forth with the correct info, including Deano.:grouphug:

I agree with you Land! He's not putting anything down just suggesting one place for happy face animation shown above, and one for a slightly more boring but essential question forum (much like the advanced reefing, never any new threads but it still serves a purpose.
