I have a netgear that's been a pain in my as$. I have to keep unplugging it to get it to work again:confused: .

I want to get a new one, needing recommendations. Whats the difference between "G" and "N" routers?

"N" routers r suppose to b better at signal ranges. its suppose to disperse its signals at a wider range. therefore cover more area. also suppose to increase data tranfer rate 300-600Mbps vs 54 Mbps.
r u sure u r configuring your wireless network correctly? u should not have to reset it everytime.

Honestly? NO:D

I believe the last router I had was a Bilkin. It worked fine, until the wife spilled coffee on it :smash: . Ever since I got this netgear, it's never worked properly. Well, maybe I don't have it config correctly. I followed the install. direction, but I'm not too computer savvy.

So, I thought I'd buy a new one:redface:

netgear is garbage IMO. I'll never buy another product from them after the fiasco I went through trying to RMA a series of faulty routers. Their switches work but still not great.

I've been using Buffalo Technology for routers... particularly the WHR-HP-G54 model. Has been rock solid... hardly ever needs to be rebooted and a great benefit is that it supports WDS which means you can wirelessly repeat the signal without running a cable between the two. You can use the same WHR-HP-G54 as a router or access point and can be easily configured.

Not to sound like a salesman, just speaking from experience. Belkin would be next on my list, then Linksys for reliability.

To top it off... the WHR-HP-G54 will only run you about $60

Linksys is the way to go. Personally im not a fan of belkin.

The problem with your router may lie in the channel that your router is transmitting on. Not sure how to change it with Netgear equipment, but if you call em up im theyll probably give you an IP to go to and change your settings for the router.

I had the same problem with a few routers and most of the solutions resided in the transmitting channel.

How do you have your router/modem/computer wired?

Netgear is crap.

Buy a Linksys WRT54G or the new ones that support the N standard, it should be $60-120.

When you get it and are setting it up, definitely change the default frequency channel. If you use a program like Netstumbler you can see what channels are in use and their relative strengths. You should pick a different channel to use, if you use the same channel the performance will suck. Most APs default to channel 6 so that is the worst one to go with.

If you get a Linksys a lot of people here can help you get it set up properly.

netgear can be ok, but it conflicts with a number of network adapters. If you have an IBM (lenovo) thinkpad, the netgear often will conflict.

Does the router have issues when you plug it in, or only when using the wireless?

If the problem happens when you are plugged in, you have a problem with your ISP or router. If its only wireless that gives you issues, then its either your wireless settings or a compatibility issue with your network adapter. If it is only wireless, before buying a new router, consider upgrading the firmware in your router.

Thanks for the replies. I did call Netgear, they walked me through some things to do and it still acted up. Today, I got a Linksys. Had it up and running in 10 minutes. I will say that the Linksys router came with a CDROM that walked me right through it. The Netgear came with a CDROM too, but it wasn't as helpful.

Have you set up security for any of your routers? If you live in a place where people are close to you and they can jump on your router you may have a problem with your new router too.

Just an fyi; Wireless B,G and N transmits using the 2.4 ghz spectrum. This is also used by most cordless phones. Wireless A uses 5ghz the spectrum of newer phones.

If there is conflict whenever you pick up the phone you can lose connection. The microwave is also a notorious interference producer.

Wep wpa? did you manually change your router id? there are several ways to do this and they all require that you go into your router and change the settings internally.

open a web page. in the address bar type 192.168.00.01 or 192.168.0.1 and see what your settings really are. They are probably factory settings that if I got onto your network with a key/password generator I could lock you out or worse :)

Not to hijack the thread...but I have the G54 and a repeater, and have never been able to get the two to talk to each other.

Do you have the linksys wireless range extender? Those have been iffy for me in the past. Not sure if you still have the receipt for it, but I'd return it and pick up 2 of the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54s I'd be glad to talk you through the setup of those.

Drop me a PM either way and we can see if we can get the Range Extender working for you.

No I have the Buffalo repeater, I will send you a PM when I have the energy to fight with it again... it is alway a downer to get beat by something so small.
