I have no problem with eating fish, but to fillet it and throw it back in the tank for personal viewing is just uncool. Killing something for food or clothing is one thing. But to purposely keep it alive in order to have a spectacle is just cruel.

Oh and it wont grow back.. survival isnt that simple ;)

in all honesty I believe this is part of a sort of "underground" sushi thing that has been around for a long time. It's meant as more of a show of the sushi chefs skills (by being able to make such precise cuts that the fish remains alive). There are entirely different types of sushi delicacies that we will never see here in the states because of what they are. It's just a way for the chef to show off to other chefs. They look at the fish as food not as a disney pixar character with friends like Ellen Degeneris.

I dont know about that idea, only because its not that hard to fillet a fish without killing it. Its done everyday at the dock... except the fish is fed to the seagulls instead of being put back into a tank for viewing.... ive seen fillet fish thrown back into the ocean when they swim away....

What im trying to get at is that its not an uncommon thing to be able to do that, hence my doubts about it being a pride thing. But then again there could be more to it than i know.

At the risk of going "biblical" on you -- and please forgive me, but with my upbringing, that's the first place I go...

One of the laws of Kashrut (Jewish dietary laws) is that folks who keep kosher are not supposed to eat part of an animal and leave the animal alive for eating the rest later. This was once common practice, and was done even into the 19th Century - on sea voyages, they would keep animals on the boat for food and would eat it piecemeal, limb by limb (since they had no refrigeration) - a terribly cruel practice.

perhaps some think it is different with fish (less encephalization) and I don't know whether or not the Torah prohibits this practice on fish - though I am CERTAIN that the Rabbis would interpret the law to include cruelty of this nature to fish.

I am so sad to hear that there are cultures that accept such cruelty. I understand your point about the other "gifts" that this island has given us... in a nutshell, i think our species has the potential for such great good, and such great evil.

Ok here's the down low on this stuff. You have to remember that in different parts of the world people have different customs and eating habits. I know I am preaching to the choir on this but since it's a fish people here get offended cause were in the fish hobby. The guy on ManhattanCoins.com might not find it all that offensive but he might find putting pennies in souvenir maker machines brutal and inhumane.

chief coins are not alive and have no feeling to pain or whatnot..... whether it be dorie or nemo from the movie or a tang of some sort, all in all the fish do not deserve to get treated like that... This amusement should not be tolerated and or happen with a living animal... as i said ill fillet his ribs and his sides and leave the rest of him there and let him walk around see how he likes it :irked: ... its cruel and inhuman... poor fishy...

i understand customs but i dont understand filleting a fish to show off ones talent.... thats kinda retarted if you ask me .... why make him suffer kill the fish and then fillet it :sigh:... its that easy...

Grisha -- you don gotta read it! :)

Albert - thank you

Crox - don't be afraid of opinions that are based in religion - i was not trying to preach, only to share a very old view on this type of practice. Generally speaking, we each bring our opinions from some place - our life experience... my life experience includes lots of religion-stuff, and i'm committed to not telling others that my way is right or their way is wrong, but rather, to opening a dialogue.

i never mean to offend.

Although i respect where your comming from daisy, i think its best to keep religion out of this.

But in any case, no matter who you speak to your going to get different opinions. I also think that there is no doubt that its just unneccesary.
