duke I believe that looking at fish tanks is good therapy, taking care of them makes you need a threrapist lol :)

I think it's a great idea, just make sure he knows what a pain it can be.
remember all the hidden costs as well, even small tanks add up.

I can't tell you the number of people who 'love' my tank when visiting. I find the phenomenom similar to people who love artwork and/or visiting museums. Admiring beauty and creating/taking care of beauty should not be confused as the same. Unless you are taking full responsibility for the care of the livestock, I stand by my statement that you can't buy someone a hobby.

James,

Does he even want to keep a reef tank or are you just going to throw this at him? There is a big difference between keeping a goldfish and a reef.

get him a gift certificate to a store and let him pickout what he wants or you can buy him a beginners book and see how it goes. I wouldn't just throw a tank at him just yet, let him read up on what it is to care for a reef tank.

I would agree with 1 or 2 reef books to get him interested. Better to hook him with books that get him excited, than a tank he ends up feeling is like a burden. It would at least be a start before you get equipment for him.

Duke ,,im with dean

this hobby comes with alot of ups and downs ,what will happen if he has a tank crash ,with saltwaer tanks this could be an issue

My suggestion as a friend ,maybe a small dog ,small bird a cat something to give your father in law some attention back as he give them ..watching a tank and touch a pet are 2 diff things ,for an older man that is down a dog or bird that plays and give him back the love would make him smile JMO

if you deside other wise ,you know ill help you out
