If he understands all that is involved in up keep, both finanacially and physically, then go a head. Otherwise, I highly recommend a smallish dog. Its a companion and gives him something to do by training and walking it.

If your that dead set on

it, Seriously look into my 6.6 gallon. A one gallon water change a week and hes set. I would advise keeping some kind of clown or blue stripe gody with some easy corals in the tanks. Its got a 36 watt Power compact and i will give you a heater filter. Al you need is a impeller for the aquaclear.

IMO, a small dog is as financially and physically demanding. I was going to get my mother a dog as a present but the fine members of MR convinced it was like giving her another child , responsibility-wise.

Duke, it seems like you want to get him something as a surprise. I understand the desire to to do so, but when it comes to keeping an animal, I don't think its the best move. Have you tried sitting down and talking to him about what exactly it is he likes? It beats guessing around, especially asking us.
Ask him if he likes to maintain a tank? Educate him and then offer your help if he needs it. If he chooses it, then we'll be happy to welcome another member to the community. If not, maybe a a hobby not related to keeping a live animal at all (stamp collecting, Civil War reenactment, ballroom dancing...etc).

My point is that it's best to ask him what he enjoys, help him make a decision, and help support him in whatever hobby he chooses.

Good luck.
