I'm in this too. Except that I have been smoking longer then most of you have been alive. Anyway, it is not enough to want to quit. As another member already stated you do have to make changes to your live style. But with so many places that don't allow smoking it should be a little easier then in past years.
My doctor prescribed a new drug on the market (CHANTIX). It is a pill, that works on the brain. Makes you feel like you have smoked more then you actually have. It is a three month program, you take the pill twice a day. It is no miracle drug, and it is not cheap, but I for one am really hoping it works. I was able to find it @ walmart for $113.89 for the 1st. months supply. You need a prescription, and from what I understand it is not an antidepressent like wellbutrin. Which by the way I tried some 8 yrs.ago it didn't work for me. Do web search for "CHANTIX". So far I am smoking less, and hope to be smoke free long before the 3 months. I'm on my third week. May God grant us the strength to quit.

Herman, I don't believe you actually mean that... I have battled cancer once, it is not worth it. Nothing in this world is worth going through chemo, radiation, shots, medically induced hot flashes.
Surgery - which is no party. You better make sure you have someone that trully loves you to help you.
Chemo - causes you to barf, get the runs, infections al over including your mouth. Loss of appetite, hair, your hands & nails to turn black, not to mention weakness.
Radiation - daily visits to the radiation clinic for 6 - 8 weeks, No walks in the sun light (forbidden for upto atleast 1 year), radiation burns, weekness (that can last upto 2 years), this time skin infections. And the list goes on.

Be blessed,
Awilda

Awilda, good luck with your treatment. You have good information on Chantix. The only thing you might want to bring up with your doctor is repeating the 12-week course of treatment after you quit since it seems to increase the chances of not picking up the habit again.

And while the medication may seem expensive, consider how much cigarettes in NYC cost nowdays!

Thanks for the advice on the chantix russianmd. I will see how it goes 3 weeks down, 9 more to go. Then I will talk with my doctor, she is the best. I'm sure that if she agrees with you, she will have no problems extending the treatment.

"And while the medication may seem expensive, consider how much cigarettes in NYC cost nowdays!"
Tell me about!! If you can call it luck, I'm border line to Nassau so I get them for under $5. But once I quit, three months of not smoking will pay for the three months of chantix.
Honestly, it will be worth anything to quit.

Be blessed,
Awilda

If you really want to quit, just do it! I tell myself 1-day at a time...so far its been 1 year since December 31st 2006. It was my New Year resolution. I had smoke for 30 years a pack a day! $6.00 x 7=$36x4=$1628 in one year. Thats a 42" flat screen TV I could have bought, or new tires for both of my cars. I gain some weight, feel better don't smell like cigarettes and look forward to live longer, and healthier. The wife is happier!! I had tried the patch!! You want to quit, its all about will power! Do it...cause everyone is rooting for you! Good luck guy!

 im 6 weeks smoke free........

it was the best decision i ever made.. i also joined the gym and i am eating healthy.. what happened

i quit cold turkey... i couldnt quit with all them things out there like patches and the electroshocks  or hypnotism (just seemed like the cheap way out and i wasnt doing it on my own)...

so i threw out my pack the night before and woke up the next day, it was hard but gum, candy, and things to munch on like pretzels and alot of water got me through the 1st day... the 2nd day was a little tough and the 3rd day was the hardest.... but i have a hard head and got through it... so here i am 6 weeks smoke free and feeling great... Eric how are you with ur quitting...

I think i can help you quit. I can follow you around with a stun gun and every time you try to light up i will zap you.It works on monkeys!

J.K. if you want to quit there is a technique where they put magnets in your ear or call 311 for a free patch kit.

Great going ALL of you quitters!!!

My dad quit the day he found out I was asthmatic. He just did cold turkey. My mom never quit, tho, and it's hard when we go home to visit. She just doesn't want to quit

that's the thing - more than anything else, I think you have to WANT to quit. Once you want to, you have a chance at it - what with so many things on the market to help!

Best Best Best of luck!!!
