Mail in Rebates are too much work, which is why Manufacturers have them. They knw half the people wont use them.

but they charged a S/H fee of ~$7...did i do something wrong?? it has the free shipping icon for the card.

you had to pick the second shipping option from the dropdown menu during checkout, it was slower but free. the default option was like $7 like you said
