The first thing you need to do is find out where the rats are coming from. There could be HUNDREDS of them and the are REAL smart, so you may kill a few, but eventually they figure it out and avoid the poison or traps.

Cat urine does not work with rats. If there are stray cats in the area, start feeding them and build then a nice home for the winter. ;-) This actually worked in the backyard of my mom's building. A neighbor would go out every day and feed the strays catfood. She also made a "home" for the cats in a corner out of wood boxes, a plastic drop cloth and old blankets. She covered it in fallen branches and leaves from the trees around the yard and you couldn't really see the cat "home".

They have so many holes and then they have the sewer grates. We have tried the box traps. The cats used to work but someone at work kept taking the shelter and food and throwing them away. Just want to thin the population out a bit.
