I assume you are certified and using rental gear at this point.
Im not sure how much money you want to spend or how often you will be diving. I use a Scubapro Classic BCD with integrated weights and air2. I use Apeks regulators and a Viper computer.

I liked the breathability of the reg set.
Whatever you decide to go with, invest in the best quality regulators you can. In the end the BCD just holds a tank on your back but the regs actually keep you alive down there.

there are scuba clubs much like this fish club that could be a good info resource. everybody has different experience with differnt equip. best bet is rent and keep notes about what you like and didn't like about different items. i have not bought my own gear yet cause i'm still in the trying and experimenting stages myself.

Rental gear is the cheapest gear on the market. It would be like renting economy cars and trying to find out what a Porsche is like.

Check out leisure pro for prices and see what price range you are in.

I dive about 10-15 times a year and been doing it for a few years I Agree with Jarrett to a point Buy the best regulator first and the best computer and then slowly buy the other parts even if you are going to rent the rest for another year atleast you own your own regulator and can always buy the right BCD or Flash light. The type of gear you buy should reflect the type of diving you would like to do. Do you wanna dive only on vacation do you wanna spear fish and go for lobsters in NYC water or NJ water do you wanna go wreck diving. These are some of the diving you could do there are many more but these are the main ones ppl do base your gear on what you would like do do and buy the best it cost more but lasts alot longer and you will be happy and comfortable when you do go diving and thats the most important thing that you are safe comfortable and having fun. If you have never done dutch springs thats is a great place to go and talk to alot of divers. Enjoy be safe and let me know if you ever need a buddy I go atleast twice a month with a friend.

Ziggy - Look at LeisurePro in NYC to get an idea of prices. Subscribe to Sport Diver magazine or look on their website for product reviews. If you are not yet certified, I would not buy until you get certified and know that you like and want to continue in the hobby. If you do purchase your own equipment purchase the best that you can afford & realize that diving equipment must be maintained and serviced in order for it to perform properly. This - like reefing is an expensive hobby - and just when you think you are all set - a better (must have) piece of equipment comes along. GLW the diving.

You could get that package at Leisure Pro for less.

The BCD looks good but I like stainless steel D rings. I would upgrade the regulators to a diaphragm first stage and this unit in the package has a piston.
It will probably be OK but just OK.
Buy a couple small lights, not huge ones that turn the night into day. You dont want to scare the night fish, just brighten the water to see them.

Something like this is perfect for a night dive. I carry one on day dives also to light up overhanging reef structures. Throw it in the pocket of the BC and its always there.

There were a couple of jokes in the dive industry when I was involved.

1 Oceanic regulators always work, they always work like crap, but they always work. Divers said that about Aqualung products also.

2 I come from a time when diving was dangerous and sex was safe.

The second one referenced the days when people would make their own tanks from fire extinguisher bottles that would hang upside down on plastic backpack frames with straps. And, the worst STD could be cured with a shot. Those days have changed remarkably but when you are deep on a reef at night you really want to know your gear will get you back to the boat.
Diving maybe a lot safer but I think If I was a cat I used up 7 of my lives on SCUBA and only one in the Marines. And I was in Iraq the first time around.

Just a heads up when you go there. It is a good idea to have an idea of what you want to look at. When I was there last they had a stock room and little floor space. So most gear you have to ask for specifically.
