When my oldest son got married last year..and moved out, he took his dog Roxy with him, so I decided in February that I really wanted to have a dog in the house..along with the cats, and fish and the rescued Rat. Yep, it's a zoo around here!
I've always had a dog, not a one of which was a pure breed dog and that just fine by me as so many are in shelters that need a good home. I wanted to get a puppy in hopes that it would be more accepting of my cats (most of them are rescues too!).
Sooo...I found a really cute dog, but didn't get it as they wanted it to go to a home with another dog as it was a feral puppy. I found a few of the same looking pup at Bide-a-Wee in the Manhattan shelter. It turns out there were 7 pups in the litter and they had brought them up here from Tennessee..and they named them too..after the 7 Dwarfs.
I ended up with Doc.
He was 7 weeks old when I brought him home and the only thing we knew about him was his Mom was an Australian Shepard and he had a NBT (Naturally bobbed tail) like most of his little mates, only 2 did have tails.
Here he is on the ride home:
Cute eh? ...and you are thinking, he looks like a beagle, or maybe even part Bernese Mountain Dog..one thing is for sure- he doesn't look like his Mom..even my vet wasn't sure what kind of dog he was except to say 'he would be a good size'.
He's been growing like a weed and now at 17 weeks he is up to about 35 pounds..and he just started teething..oh joy.
About a month ago I received an email from Bide-a-Wee that told us that one of the other 'puppy-parents' had a Dog DNA test done to see what other type of dog was Doc's dad is..(yep, they really work and cost about $60, you can buy them at BJ's! lol)
Turns out he is something I never even heard of...a Treeing Walker Coonhound... some info on these guys.

So here I sit with a bunch of cats and a dog with a Mom who is into herding other animals and a dad who 'trees' them...let's just say my cats now spend an enormous amount of time on my kitchen counter or on top of the fridge ..:sigh:
He sure is nice to come home to though
