I'd take the three 21 year olds that live above me and drive me insane with their noise and the constant dumping of used smokes on my terrace.

I'd slaughter them and hang their heads from the windows.

to extrapolate on Jim's answer, is our reef an extension of our life, and do we keep them because we need to make order out of chaos. keeping a reef in your living room is no small task. it draws on all of ones talents.

Jim you need to come back and tell us what you do, or at least another hobby, no philosophizing and running.

RG, If I was single, and it could be my tank or one night with say
Angelina Jolie, (only picked her because she's a default ten in my book, no offense meant to other women) I think my tank would still be there in the morning. Now if it was a week...
This is going to get someone in trouble.

Before we decend too far into the realms of adolescent fantasy, allow me to rescue this thread.
I design musem exhibitions, the layout, cases, etc. everything you see in an exhibition has been designed and placed in that specific spot by me. Its been hard to get into this line of work since i moved here from Sydney, Australia three years ago.
I've had various salt water tanks since i was about ten, mostly fish only with subgravel filters, I started to get into reef tanks about 10 years ago. Moving to NY has meant that most of my other hobbies have had to be put on the shelf. I used to surf everyday as well as scuba dive - not too easy to do here in the city. So my tank has become the focus of most of my spare time. Since moving here my understanding of reef tanks has become a lot better and my system has become more sophisticated (and expensive) as well. Thanks in part to all the advice you have given me and all the answers everyone has posted to my various questions.

Thanks Aaron. Not diving must be tough, somehow a tank reef just would not replace that. At least you don't have to worry about sharks and jellyfish.

Wow this is a beautiful thread! How we go from Jon asking people about their hobbies to an AA session then philosophizing about a night with a hot woman vs keeping your reef tank - well - that is really talent.

To get back on topic - I work with the CFO and Controller of a nonprofit in the lovely insurance industry. In my spare time I can be found riding horses or cleaning up Eric's latest fishtank disaster.

BC - I'm a Libra who also enjoys long walks on the beach and candlelit dinners - LOL!

I really only got into diving to catch fish for my tanks. I originally started out with a snorkel but all the really good fish know how to sit just out of reach - a little too deep to be caught in a single breath. So my cousin and i got into scuba and now there isnt a fish i cant catch. Too bad there's nothing in the Gowanus canal thats worth catching. (just mercury and DDT poisoning)
My father and my uncle got into salt water fish tanks in the 60's and 70's when things were really hit and miss and no one had a clue what they were doing. They helped my set up my first tank when i was about 10 and i have been hooked on and off ever since.

I'm a aquarius too. I like having diner parties followed by loud parties with dancing. at least I used to. now I'm afraid to have parties, don't want anything to happen to the tank.

I like cats to. all animals really, but how many can you keep in a city apartment.

sorry we got off topic, see what alcohol does.

OK everyone, you all asked for it

I started as a student in architecture at Pratt Institute and wound up graduating with a degree in Philosophy, yes, I said I have a BS in BS.

I studied formal logic by trade but and worked my way through college as a chef - I trained under some of the best chefs in the country (this is before all the reality chef shows started showing up)).

In those years I cycled competitively and was one of the best sprinters in the amateur circuit locally. There was a time when I had 20 top 5 finishes in one summer. I used to be fast!!!! I also was the founder of a team of 35 guys and gals who raced in over 700 races a year and won several awards for doing this. No small acheivement since cyclists are very peculiar - you kind of have to be to sit on a seat for 10 hours a day (sometimes).

I am also an aquarian and love making things happen. I spend my current time helping students for a living - lifes work caused by many years of frustration at CUNY - so, building, sculpting, creating etc. Whether it's buildings, food or people, I have a nautural nack.

I have been the director of a programming board for a college, ran student unions for years, managed an office of admissions for the same amount, and am currently an Asst Dean for a school of Computer Science at a major Univeristy. I am also studying Information Systems (which is not too far fetched from buidling biological systems).

I have a lovely family, one 3 yr old and one on the way (due in 2 weeks). I also have a brand new 180 (the other baby) which is currently running unattended - I hope I don't have a flood when I get home :)

Just a tid-bit of my life! In my spare time I am an auctioneer :)

Bullseye zoos, starting at $20 - any bidders . . . . . .

B: Reef tank or Woman? Hmmmm. It's a tough decision since I've been single for a while.

ok you asked for it, so here is the history of Albert.

On January 24, 1981 i was born and raised in Manhattan Beach (never lived anywhere else my entire life). as a kid i used to have a 10 gallon freshwater tank in my room for a couple of years followed by the gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, etc. in high school i set up a 20 gallon saltwater tank in my room. my parents never really thought it necessary to ever spend more than $5 on a fish, so it was mainly damsels. on occasion i'd get to pick a $20 fish here and there. this was back in the 90's when reefing was not really very popular yet, and i was running an undergravel filter.

My tank was closed down when i spent a year abroad in Israel, followed by dorming on the Yeshiva University campus in Washington Heights where i got my degree in Finance from Sy Syms School of Business. I now manage a Hedge Fund (Equities). Over the years I have received certification in Sailing, and EMT. I have also taken flight lessons and gone skydiving. I am very involved in my community and run a private security patrol in Manhattan Beach. For sports I like skiing in winter and golf in summer.

I got married in April '03 and after taking my wife snorkeling on our honeymoon, i promised my wife i would put her a reef in our living room (at the time, she thought that was a good idea). I have since married my reef tank and see my wife from time to time. I actually tend to be a bit of a perfectionist, so this hobby happens to be very good for me as there is always something i can perfect further.

Great thread Jonathan. Its nice to see some personal info about our members rather then hearing duscussions about reef related problems

I would say reefing is my second hobby to fishing. Almost every free moment that I have is spend catching striped bass from the surf or boat, or running offshore to catch sharks, tuna, and other pelagics. I've been on the water my whole life, it only makes sense that I come home to a little piece of the ocean.

Jackson, get the first striper of the season yet?

I'm heading out east next weekend for the first time and planning two trips for the fall - one in guatemala for sailfish and tuna and one to cabo for marlin and tuna.

haha hilary clinton, may i ask why?

i could not choose between a woman and my tank for obvious reasons
but have to agree that angelina is very beautiful, and very compasionate.

but i cannot choose any guy either, i have a great one already, my husband never complains about me spending too much time on the reef. i set it up mainly for him at first, he was away in iraq, and i know he enjoyed diving when he was on active duty, and he is a certified diver, so i figured if i had something to keep me busy and something to make him happy, this would be it. now over 1 1/2 years and he is just starting to really like the tanks.
