Russ you need to get a permit and most counties now are requiring you to take the handgun safety course. MOst ranges will not allow a non permit shooter unless you have a shooter with a permit with you.

I've had my permit for about 20 years. Things were different back then. Orange County requires a permit also, but that's to buy a handgun. To shoot at a range I used to go before I had a permit. Maybe different now.

I even bought rifles in those days without a permit. I'm not sure if you need a permit now or not. I used to walk into the store without a rifle and walkout with a rifle. No FBI checks, no arrest checks, nuthin.

Need a Drivers lic for long guns but handguns need permits. THe Liability with a Non-permit shooter is too great now I guess. One guy said it was an insurance thing. Had my permit for about 12 years now and yeah the laws were recently updated around 2000. BC if you're looking for a NYC permit (which you would need if you were even walking through NYC with a Long or hand gun) You have to contact the pistol licensing division in 1 Police Plaza 646-610-5000 is the main number.
