Depends if split-tunneling is enabled. If it is, your Internet traffic will go out "your" external facing interface and not through the VPN connection; thus exposing your IP.

Who are "they"? Are you operating or connecting to a vpn server?

Your "real ip" is usually hidden behind your proxy server/ISP assigned IP address which is visible to the outside world. You keep your internal network safe using a firewall. Bear in mind that ISPs don't change your assigned public IP fast enough to keep you anonymous. Also, sometimes tools/software leak your internal ip address so you have to be careful of what you have running on your pc.

Split tunnelling reveals routes to your vpn connected network to the internet, not ip address.

This is what happens when browsing the internet normally so split tunneling does not increase that risk. When he connects to a vpn server he gets access to routing information (to the vpn connected network) which is then advertised on his pc. Split tunneling allows those advertised routes to inside the vpn network to be available if his pc becomes compromised while browsing the internet (via his ISP). The knowledge of those routes could allow a hacker to gain access to the secured (vpn) network. Of course, that risk is removed if he browses the internet via the vpn.
