Is it possible to have a reputation system

i LOVE the idea, especially when there are ignorant loudmouths, mr know it alls, etc ...
who thinks their way is always right and everyone is wrong.
however all this talk is useless. this idea need to be address to josh.

It's funny and I'm glad this thread was made so thanks Rich! I actually pm'd Josh about this about a week ago saying we need some type of system to separate the people who post just to post (the ones who constantly give out bad info) and those of us who actually know what we are doing and can help those who need it. Just like was mentioned someone with let's say 1500 mindless posts might say something that isn't right and because it says "senior member" someone new will take that persons word for it and end up wiping out their tank.

Then what happens? That person gets angry and says "some idiot from Manhattan Reefs told me to do this and it killed everything in my tank." Then the site gets a bad reputation and so do the rest of us.

I would also like to add there should be more sticky threads about simple stuff that is brought up all the time like cycling live rock,proper acclimation,moving a tank etc. I mean most of us are more than willing to help people new to the hobby but it definitely gets annoying saying the same thing especially multiple times a week. I would have no problem helping write up some of these threads that should be permanent.

And its true that the senior member title underneath the name is misleading.

I think it would be a step in making MR a better forum.

The reputation system would deal with this too.

We've all at least seen one ridiculous post that misleads other newbies but we can't do anything about it. Instead, we argue, causing a 10 page thread and ending it to be locked. And then in the end, the thread question never gets answered.

And its not just newbies. I'm still a newb and will be for many years and when I read threads, I don't know who to trust because there are many contradicting ideas in ONE thread. In the end, I just pick whatever I feel seems okay and go on with it.

Of course, I've been on here long enough to know who to listen to :tongue:

Exactly..it kinda defeats the purpose of the forum. People come here to learn from people with EXPERIENCE. That's why I joined, there is always new stuff to learn. It also helps when someone explains something to you and they can answer questions VS just googling and trying to find valid info on other sites and reading 5 pages.

Just like Thirty5 said "I know who to listen to" after you are on here for a while you can tell who's a jackass and who isn't for the most part. I just feel that you shouldn't have to be on here for 6 months before you know that.

There are people who post a lot, but it is not the best or wrong advise!
There are people here with thousands of posts but they may be in the for sale section or other stuff like that.

you guys are a bunch of meanies....just because i made one honest mistake of telling someone to use windex with ammonia to dip the corals and dose the tank to rid of all pests....which btw still work like a charm for me.... i have absolutely zero pests with just one gallon of windex plus ammonia.....:skull::skull::sgrin::skull::skull:

disclaimer----nubies and experts alike, do not try this at home, this method is only done by professional like me......hahaha

the idea is sound but i'm afraid it will turn into a popularity contest and "stalk and revenge" system. that's just my two dollars.

dude it took me only 6 posts to know not to listen to you....hahaha

there will forever be different opinions on any type of forum...be it reefs, cars, movies, etc.
research, read, read, and read some more.....learning to obtain correct info. is also an integral part of our hobby.
up to date publications (not that it's always correct but at least it has some weight to it) could be, for this example, taken as an objective reference and forum advice could be a subjective one.

Reputation systems are terrible and never ever accurate. I am sure there is a better way but from what I have experienced it is terrible. Even forums I go to that have the "THANK YOU" systems in place are horrible.

hmmm....chief is a little bitter at the reputation system....you should call reputation.com....you hear it on the radio all the time....lol

i agree with chief (wow that seems strange just typing it....hahaha) i have seen in the past on our own mr.....revenge reefer rating, stalking one member by another and arguing and or disrupting each other threads, etc.
i think chief (and other mods) would vouch for that :fishhit:

funny you say that me and chief have discussed that very issue about people leaving spiteful ratings. There would be a lot more people with negatives if there was actual moderation between them. Like if the mods actually got in the middle of bad transactions and were able to take a spiteful negative away by judging the situation. Ahh I guess only in a perfect world.
