if i buy a malu anemone for my tomato clown will it move around my 2ft nano reef as it is full of frags iv been growin and i dont want the anemone to sit on any of them because last time i had an atlantic that killed my xenia what other anemones would you advise keeping for a clown

Host anemones will all move to some extent, and they will all sting your nice coral frags. Some people can get away with this in a large tank but in nanos it can easily wipe out a lot of corals. My advice is to simply not ever keep them in nano tanks. They are incredibly sensitive creatures and should really be kept in more stable conditions in any case. Heteractis malu in particular has a really terrible survival rate in aquariums of any size.

Your tomato clown will do just fine without a host anemone. There are several corals andobjects that clowns will 'host' as if it were an anemone. Finger leathers, frogspawn coral, even a rubber koosh ball if you're desperate. :D

Matt, I think it's time you had your own tank again. I know you love coming up with creative new designs and setups, don't you think it's time for something new?

Nope! :D

I need a couple years off I think. I don't miss the daily maintenance and electric bill.

Hi Matt, great tank!

Just had a couple quick questions about your sand. What brand is it, where did you get it, and have you had any other problems with it since getting things up and running? Is it the Caribsea Black "Tahitian Moon" sand?

I would be using it much like you, in a small tank that will be undergoing frequent water changes. I'll also be using a small refugium with it. Would it be helpful to use a magnet to pull as much iron out of the sand as possible? A little DIY electromagnet would be super easy to make (http://www.science.edu.sg/ssc/detailed. ... 05&cat=207) and for such a small amount of substrate would not require a whole lot of effort I would think. Any thoughts?

And... any new pics of you tank handy? I'd love to see how it's coming along.

Thanks!

- Mike

Mike,
Thanks for the compliment and
:welcome:

I yanked the sand in this tank fairly quickly. I didn't notice any toxicity issues but admittedly it wasn't in there for long. It was the Tahitian Moon brand. Do you have a cleaning magnet? Seems like that would be easier than making an electromagnet even.

Unfortunately I tore this tank down a few months ago. The electric bill with the MH and the resulting AC needed, along with my desire for only rare LPS and SPS frags, was just killing my wallet.

Matt, did you ever setup that tank you stumbled across in the street?

You running any tanks of your own these days? Or considering it? :)
