  1. Brown slime at the base of a Sarcophyton

some of my leathers used to have this stuff on the base, as far as I could tell it was some type of algal growth I used to just brush it off with my fingers or a soft brush (it wouldn't blow off even with using a powerhead) but I could pretty easily rub it off BTW, nice looking leather. How...
  2. Sinularia problems

Sounds like your coral may have some type of bacterial infection. If you have a qurantine tank I suggest moving this piece to it otherwise you run the risk of the infection, if there is one, spreading to other corals. If no quarantine then you may want to consider fragging healthy-looking...
  3. Preferred method for topping off without sump?

I used to keep a container filled with topoff water in the tank stand and would manually topoff in am and pm - becomes a pain after a while. If I don't add a sump when I set up next time I plan on installing some type of cabinet or cupboard above the tank to hide a topoff container in it with a...
  4. What am I?

I am a yellow tail damsel, or a green chromis Both inexpensive, durable and decent looking fish.
  5. How do I feed anemones with clown fish in the tank?

Lynn I had a clarkii clown that paired up with a stalk of xenia and would try to feed it. It would simply drop chunks of food on it after the clarkii had its fill.
  6. Sinularia problems

More likely than not your sinularia is getting plenty of light. I kept several under 110watt pc in a 46gal bowfront. They did fine on the bottom and also about midway up in the tank. Easy on the lugol's dips, 30 drops in 2gal is an awful lot and 30min is very long. What type of waterflow is...
  7. sump pump

I plan on setting my reef tank back up (46gal) after I finish my basement and am looking for ways to save $$$. I've figured out how to save about $120 on lighting by DIY but was having trouble with the price of pumps for the sump I plan on having. Then I though about using my old fluval 304 as...
  8. Sarcophyton Question

Try rubbing the green areas with your finger, if algae it should easily rub off. I had a large sinularia that would close up randomly, although when my system went out of whack it closed up more often and for longer periods I would also check to see that no neighbors (zooanthids, yellow...
  9. Problem with Reef Builder?

What are your parameters? Alk, ph? It doesn't sound like the product, or your use of it, would result in what you are experiencing. Perhaps it was coincidental? How close are soft corals to the stonies having problems? Perhaps a chemical warfare is taking place, just a guess but it does happen.
  10. fishless reef?

Thanks for the responses. I will be dealing with a 46gal bowfront. I did consider the sandbed and LR critters needing fed. In your opinion what would you consider a light fish stock for a 46gal reef? 2 or 3 two inch fish? More, less? Thanks in advance.
  11. fishless reef?

Anybody keeping reef aquarium with few or no fish? Just curious as to how much the feeding of fish and the fish waste add to the maintenance burden; including necessary water changes. Would a reef tank with just a couple fish, or no fish at all, require fewer water changes and lower volume...
  12. 28 gallon bow front

I wouldn't worry. I would add the LR you planned. Yes after adding everything that goes into a reef tank the water volume will be substantially lower than the tank volume. That's good when it comes to water changes....10% of 29 gal is three gallons. If your tank actually only has 19 or 20...
  13. Help. Fuzzy Mushrooms dying off.

scallop I too had difficulties with shrooms but success with other soft corals in the same tank - strange given that shrooms are supposed to be one of, if not the, easiest coral to keep. Mine eventually turned white too and never came back. I did learn something researching vol.2 of Sprung...
  14. Flatworms

There is a nudibranch that will eat them, www.flyingfishexpress.com has them for sale but they are expensive and will perish once their food supply is gone. Six line wrasse supposedly eats them and is reef safe, you may want to research that route. FWIW the flatworms shouldn't harm anything in...
  15. Need help with leathers

McReef Try a little more water flow around those.
