  1. Brown diatom/algae ?'s

It sure sounds to me that you are seriously overloading your tank. That sounds like a LOT of bioload, which could easily account for high phopsphates or nitrates causing the algae bloom. That would be my first guess. What do others think...too many animals? Sara
  2. I have a BTA, not much "B"

Well, like most other issues with living creatures, I'm sure it's never as simple as one little rule, no matter who says it. I wonder what benefit or advantage that gives the animal. There must be a reason that they form or dissapear. Sara
  3. I have a BTA, not much "B"

I've done quite a bit of research on this topic, and I have read that BTA's are indeed induced to form their bubble tips when hosting a clown. According to Fautin and Allen (widely accepted as the experts on this topic) in Anemone Fishes and Their Host Sea Anemones, "Bulb seems to be related...
  4. Damsel and Trigger Tank

Don't you think the triggers will hurt the damsels? Should definitely be interesting! I'd suggest adding the damsels before anything else, so they at least have some territory staked out to hide. Just a thought..I don't keep triggers, but in my experience at the LFS where I work, there's a...
  5. substrate for sump can i use it??

If it were my tank, silica sand is a risk that I'd prefer not to take. I'm sure it would work, but I'd be worried about the constant supply of diatom "food." I don't know if anyone has heard of this before, and I may very well be misinformed, but I have been told that microscopic silica can...
  6. Confusing situation (long)

Sharkky - Did you ever get your macros to take off? I just read this thread, and the first thing I'd try would be a 12 hr photoperiod (not 24/7, which I think you already changed) and more light. In the most basic terms, algae need very little to survive and grow...light, CO2, organic waste...
  7. percula behavior

If the anemone is E. quadricolor, it's possible that the fish rejected the anemone after a trial run, since bulb-tips aren't a natural host for perculas. I haven't ever heard of that happening, so that's just a guess. To figure out how an anemone could reject a clown, we would have to know...
  8. What cause RTN ?

I believe, from the literature research that I've done for two major papers on this subjec (the first one was on bacterial causes of coral bleaching), bacteria are oftentimes the cause of a bleaching event. That doesn't mean, however, that increased water temperature is not also a cause. It...
  9. Pics and a question

Some serpent stars are piscivores, and will catch small fish with their arms. Most are detritovores, and won't bother anything that's alive. It's hard to tell what kind you have, so I can't say for sure if yours is agressive. And if you keep only large, quick fish, then I'd think you'd be...
  10. Can you help me identify this

I can't open the file. Can you make it an attachment?
  11. didnt mean to do it

It's moving because of nerve signals still firing. The same reason humans can twitch after death. I do believe that in nature, it would grow into a new star. No promises about captive stars, though. I hope he will grow into two. They have amazing regenerative powers. Let us know what...
  12. STRESSED OUT YELLOW TANG

Is he already stressed, or are you just trying to prevent it? If he's stressed, I betcha he'll get ich. It's kinda inevitable. If that happens, try slowly lowering the SG to around 1.020 or 1.018. It's low, but it interrupts the reproductive cycle of the protozoan parasite. I did it, and...
  13. Skinny Lawnmower...

Aaaah, I miss mine. He jumped out of my tank a few days ago. Very strange. Anyway, he was a fat sucker! He always ate enthusiastically off the walls and rocks, and shared dried algae sheets with my yellow tang. I think that and nori are both good ideas. Mine always seemed to like...
  14. Refugium Lighting - 24/7 is Bad-Says Kent Marine University

It's red cyano...with a little green hair algae for good measure. The hair algae came from the LFS tank, and the cyano was my personal addition. Yeah, I do exactly that with a turkey baster, and it seems to be keeping it in check. The cyano, that is. The hair is not spreading, so...
  15. Refugium Lighting - 24/7 is Bad-Says Kent Marine University

Yeah, I'm not concerned about the lighting for that situation. I was just using it as an example. Unfortunately, it is not a small branch, but the tip of one of the major ones. It's ok, though. It's not encroaching any further. Sara
