  1. help id coral invaders please

I bought this coral a few weeks ago. It was starting to recede around the edges, and had what appeared to be a damaged spot. Within a day, the receding edges were gone, and the damaged spot was also hidden. Unfortunately, the damaged spot was actually some kind of invader, and had simply not...
  2. Choice of Lenses Aquarium Photograpy

Thank you all for your information, and suggestions. My next purchase will be an external flash. This coming weekend I'll spend some time with the tripod, and different aperature settings, from minimum to maximum as recomended.
  3. Choice of Lenses Aquarium Photograpy

About a week ago, I got a Canon 300d (the digital rebel), and have since got the cable for remote shutter release for use with a tripod. I've been looking at the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Zoom Lens, mainly because I don't want to have to change lenses all of the time and thought it would...
  4. canon rebel digital

Would setting the ISO equivalent to a higher number also help show the background? I always used ISO 400 in my 35mm and never had a problem with dark backgrounds. I'm also looking at getting one of these beauties. May just borrow a friends and play with it for a weekend to see how I like it.
  5. Calcium Reactor CO2 usage

I've called around town, and most places won't refill a tank unless they sell it, or lease it. Also if you purchase the tank, you are responsible for the hydrostatic test every 5 years. Do you guys buy, or lease the tanks?
  6. Calcium Reactor CO2 usage

I'm currently working on a DIY calcium reactor, and trying to decide what size of CO2 tank to get. My question to everyone is what size CO2 tank do you have, and how often to you need to get it refilled?
  7. Tank leaning forward. Prediction?

Sounds like you will need to tear it down, and replace the stand. If it's made out of press board, and it's swollen, then it's severely weakened. To prevent a catostrophic failure, I would recomend completely replacing the stand, or someday the whole stand might just colapse.
  8. Birdsnest Growth

That's the problem - it's an auto-focus camera with a small display. I can't tell if the picture is in focus, or what it is focused on until after it has been taken, and downloaded.
  9. Birdsnest Growth

I was so tickled with the growth of this frag that I had to share it. From what I could see, there are about 30 new spikes on it since I got it on the 16th of July (15 days ago). There is also a smaller one with fewer spikes on it, but also doing great. Please excuse the picture quality.
  10. kalkwasser drip ideas?

I've been using a medical feeding bag. It's the kind used for IV feeding, and has a dip-chamber were you can monitor the flow. I got mine from a pharmacy that also sold medical supplies. Cost was about $10. It came with the drip-chamber for monitoring, plus the roller/pinch valve to...
  11. Need help fixing busted acrylic tank

I'm not an expert, but I would recomend using weldon 3 or 4 (water-thin) to get in the cracks, and seal everything back together. Then maybe a bead of weldon 16 around the edges for a little added strength.
  12. Weekly Discussion - How do you justify your reef?

Can't really justify it, other than it makes me happy. I can sit down on the couch, and look at the mini-reef and forget about everything else.
  13. What reef-related stuff are you gonna do this weekend? :-p

I'm going to build a surface simming box for my protein skimmer to get rid of the skum on the surface of my sump. After that, I think I'll do a 40 gallon water change, and give everything a good cleaning. Scratch the water change - just got the results from the city water analysis - PO4 from...

  15. Sump design.. any suggestions?

I would recomend using bulkhead fittings to feed the pumps, rather than the over-the-top setup you have. This will make the pump self priming. The setup you have there will be difficult to prime and get all of the air out of. a bulkhead will also reduce the amount of resistance in the...
