  1. Catalina Aquarium MH bulbs?

Can anyone tell me about Catalina Aquarium 150 HQI bulbs. When I order Ushio bulbs from "Pet Supply Liquidator", they sent Catalina Aquarium Bulbs. Since there is a relatively large price difference, I am not very happy. But, the question remains, anyone use these bulbs? Had a good or bad...
  2. Reef Safe marker

Sharpie markers are "OK" once dry. But it does hold up well to being "water soaked" when used on glass. As a side note, sharpie markers were once "accidentally" used to touch up black anodized panel on the SpaceLab. Tens of thousands of dollars later NASA determined that sharpie markers are...
  3. Is this a safe DIY project from a chemistry perspective?

Sorry Carinya for taking so long to get back to you; I lost  my home computer. I could not find my file at work. I agree with what dupaboy1992 said about the product. However, I have found that many products simply have not been tested and thus the warning about use in waters...
  4. Is this a safe DIY project from a chemistry perspective?

I don't think anyone would propose exposing their animals to the chemicals listed. The issue is, once cured, does Plasti-Dip leach these chemicals into sea water. Many materials use "toxic" material but are safe once cured (epoxy is one example). I thought I had some information on this...
  5. Inexpensive MH ballasts?

It seems that you can modify some fixtures to hold the 150W DE MH bulbs. You still have to get a compatible ballast. After spending hours trying to get a handle on the details, I understand why most people will go with a retro kit. The information out there is so incomplete that it is hard...
  6. How do I catch a Mantis Shrimp in my tank?

Thanks LordNikon for ID. I still have my trap in the tank. The bait has been taken a few time with nothing in the trap. So far, I have only caught snails.
  7. How do I catch a Mantis Shrimp in my tank?

I have caught two mantis shrimp. One mantis shrimp was caught accidentally when I had remove a lot of rock to get a grouper out of my tank. The mantis deside to take a walk just before I transferred its rock back into my tank. The other mantis was caught using this trap...
  8. Coral Mag inspiration

I have been thinking about getting one of these tank also. I was wondering what corals would do well. I thought a clown Goby would go good in this tank.
  9. Peacock mantis in PA

Keep reading. The $100+ was not the price the guy was proposing. He was talking about in the $20-$40 range. Still, it is a bit more than the Rancor cost  . I just thought I would point out this thread for those still looking for a mantis.

  11. Oven temp to bend thin acrylics?

I have found clamping the material between two wood paint stirrers work well. http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=50433
  12. Inexpensive MH ballasts?

For details on using the 6500K 250W Iwasaki Metal Halide designed for mercury ballasts see http://aquarium.union.rpi.edu/articles/DIY_MH.html. Hope this helps.
  13. Inexpensive MH ballasts?

The cheapest is to use the 6.5K bulbs for mercury ballasts. It is possible to get 250Watts for under $100 for ballast (~$25), bulb (~$60), and socket($5). If you want to use 10K, 14K, or 20K bulbs, it gets harder to find a "cheap" solution. http://www.thelogicalreef.com has 175 watt 10K...
  14. nano lighting question

I don't know :? ... I have CSL 32 watt 50/50 on my(ok, my wife's) 6 gal. I noticed a similar drop in coloration. My are on the bottom of the tank (~12" down). Yet, the green stars are bigger than they were. Could it be some lose their color as they grown bigger and spread??
