  1. Melting Mushrooms

I have a 75G, mostly mushroom tank that has been going for about 10 years. The mushrooms have pretty much taken over and cover pretty much everything. A few days ago a few started to look shrivels and unhappy. Yesterday, the started to melt (emitting thick colored mucous with mesenterial...
  2. Green Star Conquest

I'm sure my local fish store would like it. The stuff they have now is more of a grey/brown base and mine is deep purple. I guess I'll see what happens...
  3. Green Star Conquest

I think I bought this coral 5 years ago, and it was the second I had ever bought after trying some mushrooms. Now it has covered half of my tank and doesn't show signs of stopping. It's growing and stinging away any other coral in it's way (even mushrooms)... While I'm pleased that I'm able...
  4. My fish do weird things, how about yours?

My coral beauty angelfish hates one of my clownfish...just one. It doesn't care about any other fish in the tank. I even had the opportunity to separate the two at one point and the fighting stopped completely; the angelfish never bothered any other fish. My coral beauty recently discovered...
  5. Rookie Veteran Needs Help

My guess is that the red slime is a combination of the new lights, your die off (depending on how long ago it was) and a lack of organisms competing for nutrients. I have found that the red slime can get going pretty good when my metal halid bulbs get old or if I get the really cheap bulbs (I'm...
  6. System downgrade...

(4 lbs per gallon) x (75 gallon tank) x ($6 per pound) = $1,800 for 300 lbs of live rock 8O I can't even imagine that...Where do the fish swim?
  7. System downgrade...

Thanks, I got inspiration from a previous post involving a 500 gallon tank. Unlike his thorite glued towers, the only thing holding mine up are luck and faith. I've noticed a few tanks recently here with low poundage rock work in intricate designs (mine is 50 lbs max for my 75gal). I guess...
  8. System downgrade...

492W system down to a 219W system: Does that not mean the same thing when talking about T5s? Or are my cheapy corals just not that demanding?
  9. System downgrade...

I shelled out the money for my yearly replacement bulbs for my light hood a couple weeks ago (150W x2 plus 96W actinic PC x2). My wife, who is being laid off in a few months, had a harder time with than in the past. I can't say I blame her... Meanwhile, in the 6 years I've been at this, I've...
  10. hang on skimmer

I think Aqua C is a good brand, but the PRO version gives you a bit more power, which you may appreciate with a 60 gallon hex. The recommended limit on protein skimmers is often (if not always) very generous.
  11. switch over

If the live rock is from a local store and it's pre-cured, you shouldn't have any trouble. Just like adding fish, do it a little at a time to avoid stressing the system. Do regular tests and be prepared to do a waterchange if ammonia starts to register.
  12. supplements/additives

I guess it would depend on what soft corals you have. I think, for the most part, water changes take care of the needs of many soft corals just fine. I don't think calcium is a huge concern either with anything that doesn't have a shell. Upon the advice of my LFS, I started adding Iodine to...
  13. newbie needs help with 2 critters

The "shrimp" is an amphipod, I think. They're peaceful and don't get bigger than the one you caught. I don't know what the other one is. A coral of some kind.
  14. Help a newb ;) Where to buy INTERCEPTOR?

I just went to the local veteranarian. After a bit of explaining about how I intended to use it, I got a few pills from him without a problem. This veterinarian required positive testing for heartworm before he'd give it to a dog so honesty was definately the best, and easiest, policy.
