I have a VS3 72" on my 500 and I am very happy with it. I could clean it every other day if I wanted to, but I wait till the scum gets nice and thick. Boy does it smell!

Definately clean off dying matter. It will help cycle faster. You will not lose any beneficial bacteria.

How long was the fish not eating? They lose weight very fast. Could be either his insides protruding or his last meal.

Nothing wrong with mechanical filter. It will help keep the water clean. The only problem maybe the removal of small critters. Just keep it clean or it can pollute the tank doing more harm than good. You can also use it on an "as needed" basis.

Ozone will kill everything!!! If it gets into the main tank at high levels.....say goodbye! When used right can be a good way to keep water crystal clear.
