I might be misunderstanding what your saying, but the smaller the bubble the more total surface area you have. It is the surface are that captures the skimmate. If you have more air than the body of the skimmer can handle, with too much turbulance, the bubles colide with enough force to combine, therby creating larger bubbles and less surface area.

It is definately a fine line between the amount of bubbles and the amount of air, because in theory you can get more bubbles with more air.

Look what happens when i add more air, notice the valve. I'll leave it restricted for now.

i am a fan of ER. maybe because that's the only skimmer i've tried(well i did try the remora pro and urchin pro but that's nano talk)

i'm currently running chris' old ER on my 120g and i couldn't be happier. i have no complaints. i also run a ER ES 5-3 on my 40br. good skimmers for the money

The 1st pic is 1 hour after a cleaning.
The 2nd is 6 hours after that cleaning.:wink1:
The 3rd is just bubbles.

Rich, you are correct Beckett really is king.

Yep Kedd. For the price and performance, they can't be beat. The only reason why I mess with the other skimmers is because I am trying to find a skimmer that is more quiet and adds less heat to the tank. When I move into a house with a garage, the beckett will be in before any of my furniture :D

Anyway, here is 3 days worth of skimmate from the ATI BM250. This skimmer is really doing pretty well. There is too much air in the body for it to skim dry at the setting I currently have it at, but it is doing its job keeping my nutrients in check. I am goiing to experiment running it less water and at different setting to see what skim I can get out of it.

Rich I understand.
Everyone has different need and for 6 years noise was a factor(a big one).
This skimmer would have not cut it with the wife in the family room.

Well now I just want to figure out how to drive my skimmer with a 671 DD.( boaters will know).

Do you get it?

(~aprox 900 hp diesel engine known for performance but not longevity for non boaters)

I should have used another engine?
There are many out there, but this one got my home for years.
I did lose a cylinder or a valve her and there, but she always did her job

Good stuff Fritz, yes there are better, but this is a strong motor, and first that came to mind
You are one of the people invited to my BBQ as soon as it warms up(I'm serious) you too have a passion for the motor.
I hope you can make it!!!

BTW, how good are you at horse shoes????

DAS EX-2 VS. ATI Bubble Master 250

question for Rich,
do you think the expense would be worth changing to the bm 250?
what do you think the difference in the skimming would be?

The ex-2 doesn't come close to the performance of the ATI BM250. Worth changing? Yes, if you can't keep your nutrients in check with the DAS.

anyone have an opinion on the best 'angle-ing' of the elbows in a Deltec Turbo (or similar) skimmer? they can either face more towards the wall of the body, or more towards the center. just wondering if there is a best way.

Following the information provided in your Turbo 1060s thread on ReefCentral, I have the elbows on my DAS BX-3 pointed towards the wall of the body to reduce turbulence in the skimmer neck.

but then there was that other guy with a whole different method.

when i cleaned mine out, i faced them almost directly at the wall but found the surface (in the neck) to be very turbulent. when i turned them to face more towards the middle, it got a lot less turbulent (not what i would have expected) i also noticed a lot more bubbles coming out as they are now facing the exit (hole in the middle of the bottom)

That's the way you set it up for me, Rich. I wanted to try the above method for comparison's sake. I need to revisit the issue  and see which really works best for my tank.
