Its usually not fatal but did you look up lymphocystis also known as cauliflower disease?

Could also be ich if there were white spots instead of the fungus looking blemishes.
If it was indeed ich you should quarantine the rest of your fish and run the tank fallow ( no fish in it) for 6 weeks to let the waterborne ich die off because of lack of host. Ich could explain why they were treated with copper before.
