ok i try that combo

Just because you change your bulb combination to the same one someone else runs doesn't mean that you'll see the same coloration in your corals as he does.

Are you both running the bulbs in the exact same fixture?
Same ballasts?
Same reflectors?
Same height above the tank?
Same water parameters?
Same corals? Inverts? Fish?
Same placement of those corals and inverts under the same parameters questioned above?

My point is, there are so many variables contributing to the way your tank appears than just bulb combination that switching your bulbs to match someone else's without changing everything else to match their setup is like saying we both have cars, what tires are you running to achieve 150 mph. You don't know what kind of car they have or any of the other variables that contribute to 150 mph.

Jerl if you don't mind me asking...what size tank do you have? If over 100 gallons stick with MH's, you can however go with 175W MH's with 15 or 20K's instead of the 250's if your worried about the cost. Also keep in miind that SOME people who might be running T5's have smaller tanks under 100g's .. with the exception of a few that I know of personally. If anyone care's to differ they can always post a pic like you stated. Anthony27's tank with his 40 breeder has the correct bulb configuration.. almost looks like it's under MH's except for no shimmer. Saw it in person.

Jerl, what bulbs are you running now? I have worked with T5 and MH in numerous situations and while I love a good halide, T5s are far superior in the fact that you can fine tune the color of the tank so that every coral pops. As far as growth goes, I don't think you can top the right halide over a good tank (sorry LED fanatics, I'm not ready to drink the koolaid) but that isn't to say that in the right hands you can't get respectable growth out of T5s. I personally like to mix my halides with T5s for maximum effect. My most recent show tank has a 400w SE ushio 14k (love it even by itself) and 4 2' HO Geissman T5s, 2 actinic+ and 2 pure actinic, placed one on each side of the halide since it's a cube tank.

I find that the best tanks with T5s have several different spectrum bulbs over them instead of just 2 or 3.

You also have to remember that light over the tank is cumulative, so if you aren't using lights that are as bright or have the same kind of par you just need to leave them on longer.

LOL.. just saw MS thread... hmmm, he does have a point. I believe it's just the bulb configuration though. Try checking reef central aswell. I believe i saw a few posts there with someone explaining a configuration he used and has pics up aswell.

MasterSwimmer any recommendations to help??
Jerl... list your bulb config up.

hey

Ive done it all.... T5, LED, MH.... But by far if you want the best out of color for your sps Metal Halide is the best. I just switched back myself from T5 to MH. The Electic is more plus heat is also more but it gives me what i want as far as color.

I agree with u 100% on the switched.
