Well I was going to save this for a brand new post but i guess i can repeat it later with the before and after pics....the miracle worker in my case (and believe me, you guys have seen the intital pics it was bad) and i tried everything under the sun to help clarify the problem, i took everyones advice, i got a bigger skimmer, i tried different medias (phos, carbon, poly, etc...) the problem was my tank was consuming to much nutirents at an alarming level everyday so the green was suffocating my tank, my corals and sooner or later the fish.....I switched back to my old lighting setup, 2-10ks and 2 55w acntics, from 4 -12ks, i limited the lighting period big time, and i lessened the feedings.....no help...water changes, small and large only added to the problem....the 100% ones only cleared the tank for a day or so....(i have progression pics) ....than back to swamp tank....i hated every minute of it, so my 2nd to last resort other than cooking the entire tank (rocks etc...) was and i think someone mentioned it , *Algone*....I didnt believe it would actually work, i mean cmon $30 or so for 18 packets....

I was in constant connection with a man named Thilo from algone and he said it would take "a couple of weeks" but not to worry...I on the other hand was freaking out since after Christmas (thats how long this tank has been green)...so i swallowed it all and forgot about the tank for a couple of weeks only feeding once in a while and changing packets like the instructions said every 5 days for crystal clear water...and wow i SWEAR to all of you even though it might only be a gimmick to most, it cleared my tank in 2.5 weeks to the T....Every morning i woke up it was clearer and clearer than the day previous i couldnt believe it and neither could anyone who saw it happening....Well I am on my 3rd week and its 100%, from all angles, all my corals are thriving like there is no tomorrow, and recently i added and algae blenny and copperband and i couldnt ask for anything else....feels like my old 30g again .....plus my nitrates alike are all at 0's and everything else stabalized....(what was not right before) ....I am one of the happiest reefers at this time b.c i get to actually see whats inside my tank again, LoL ...and the fact that i can actually be a part of this forumn once again, i def will post pics by this weekend if anyone is interested.....but i have to say i would suggest this to anyone due to the fact that i had one serious problem on my hands that did not want to be fixed, indeed it was a "rare event" in the marine world but at least i know something can and will help....

yup i can vouch for his tank. I couldn't believe my eyes his tank is crystal clear we both tried it and as off today my tank has never been so clearer. I never has the same problem with any algae and I just decided to try it and so far so good i think i will order a couple of boxes of this stuff to use, and just replace it every 2 weeks just for maintenance. Just my opimion! This stuff really works

Great things worked out for you Chris. Welcome back! Did you find the cause for the algae outbreaks? The reason why I ask is the following:
1. Green water (algae) as you put it is fueled by high nutrients Phosphates etc. And certain spectrums of light will fuel the explosion also.
2. Algone = cure but not a solution because the original cause is still there unless you fixed whatever it was.

Even though the tank may be crystal clear now all you need is something (the cause) to tip and you will end up right where you started.

I do hope that your tank will stay clear for good!! :)

Chris, great news. Rekindles your enthusiasm for the hobby again. Nice to have you back.

Think about what Herman said though. Now that it's behind you, you might be able to think back clearly (pun intended) to identify the cause.

Anyway, glad to see you again and now the swap will mean a whole lot more to you. :D

Thanks guys, yea i am praying and hopefully with some prayers from the MR board it will never come back lol ....but i already have broken the cycle thus far in terms of, this has been the longest streak of no green in the tank since i first got it....but i also still have algone being used so ...makes me kinda nervous to take it out now....but yea i promise pics this weekend, lots of softies now so it looks good!!!

I am gonna try and pinpoint the exact problem, but i think with the less powerful lights even though that makes no sense when you look at a MH standpoint, changing the light cycle and less feedings has contributed but i dont think that cleared the tank...i think whatever is in algone helped balance the water parameters enough to fight the algae bloom away....just my 2cents...but excited to be back non the less!!!! =)
