Why red? everybody knows bulbs in the red spectrum tend to grow undesirable algae http://reefkeepingfever.com/lighting.htm

Wingo and I discussed it and felt 2 watts of red would be a good addition (we are testing a theory of his in regards to adding the red spectrum). If I have a problem with algae I will not use them anymore. I just put these corals into this tank but have no bad algae and very good coraline growth in my other tank. I have a good CUC and have very good maintenance habits. I do not overfeed, I do weekly 25% water changes and I have a moderate lighting schedule. I am thinking it will be OK. (Not to mention the reds and the fish in the tank really pop under the red)

Another use of the red could be just for good look,

with 4 power supplies, you can program it like:
5:00 red on.....to provide the reddish look of sun rising
5:30 blue1 on
6:30 blue2 on
7:00 white on/red off
:
:
:
17:30 red o.....to provide the reddish look of sun setting
18:00 white off
21:00 blue2 off
24:00 blue1 off
and recycle

I talked Wingo down to $350 (I bought a nice acan from him at the same time ;)) He usually charges $400. I looked all around before I decided to go with him, nanotuners, ebay, other people. This was the best price I found and included same day installation (after letting him know I was coming a few days in advance so he could get the supplies).

Yeah, I was out of the country for 8 days. When I came back I really noticed the growth in my corals. They always grow well but when you don't see the tank for 8 days and come back you notice it so much more. I am very happy I switched to LEDs. I will take a picture later this week.

LEd's

I have 96 watts of PC but Wingo is upgrading me to 72 watts of LED's (actinic and regular with a couple watts of red). It is going to rule. This is what I feel like inside right now.

I will post my review later on in the week after my coral has adjusted some.

I would love to hear how it works out with the LED's only. I have been contemplating changing from my PC's to LED's with a DIY project but can't find enough information to convince me to do it yet. The reduced wattage and reduced heat should allow me to increase my light without encouraging more battles over the Con Ed bill. Throw in the fact that my honey wants a "nicer top" (on the tank that is) and is handy enough to do the build and I just may go that route.
