I had not heard of them. I skimmed the product and site, it looks interesting.
A few other companies have similar products to help cycle tanks. sea chem and marc weiss are two others.

ink, in your testing was there ever any ammonia or nitrite present?

what about the nitrate levels?

have you tested since the fish went in?

so how long was it from the time you added the rocks and right now, to the time you put the fish in?

you should get spykes involved in this, he's doing a cycle using pure ammonia to form the nitrites. it would be interesting to see which cycles a tank faster.
he also is keeping tabs on how many bacteria are formed each day by looking at water samples in his labs microscopes, now that's fun :)

Alot of these products will give false reading the 1st week or so, they usally say that on the box. So you can't alway go by the reading on the test to see if the product is working, you need to look more at the corals and fish. Since the tank is going to have high ammonia and nitrites in the beginning these products will convert that to nitrates so you need to check out the nitrate level as they could go high. For fish this isn't a problem but for corals it is.

These products do work, some better than others, and are very good for starting fish tank but it your going to use them for corals you going to have some nitrates problems in the beginning.

Way because when I cycle a tank using ammonia cloride, which I had to get from a chemical company. The reading that I got on ammonia test kit was black. It took a couple of weeks for the color to come down to a level that the kit could actually read but once the tank was cycled it could hold a tremendious load.

i no this is an easy way to go but i feel so much safer letting the tank cycle the old fashion way. with the 2 cocktail shrimps. i guess my own .02 c

All this is really is putting a source of ammonia in the tank to start the cycle which you could but in almost anything including a fish if you want. The problem is it's a very low source and the once you start to add more live stock the tank will not be able to handle and your going to have an ammonia spike until the tank can build up enough bacteria.

The way I see it, if its too good to be true, it probably is. Very often short term results may be ok but until someone shows me long term tests/results, I am not convinced.

The most basic and almost sacred motto in our hobby is patience. I will stick by that. Every owner of every great tank that we admire adheres to this one principle. Yes that includes the most respected Marine Biologists of our time. Why dont one of you go on RC and try to post this thread on the expert forum with Anthony Calfo..... I think even the polite scientist will curse.

You want your tank to cycle? You want ammonia? Rather than adding fish or other animals try pissing in it!! It works quite well. And remember that your first piss in the morning is sterile!!!

Non patience generally leads to a mediocre tank at best, where the owners cant get any satisfaction so they keep changing things around in the vain attempt to make the tank look somewhat ok for a couple of days.

What can I say, THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTION FOR PATIENCE!!

Instigator

thats why i added fish slowely to make sure that bacteria grew to handle the livestocks waste etc.. i dont no maybe i will do an experiment with that stuff on my 10 gallon tank that i have started up with only live rock..

The thing is with Nitrex you can add all the fish you want for day one. The stuff works very well, I don't know about the other stuff as I've never used it, no real reason to.

that's what spykes is using.
this allows you to feed the bacteria which end up consuming the nitrites.
you can build much larger colonies of bacteria this way.
when you add things like dead shrimp, you have to wait for the shrimp to break down and become waste, this way with the ammonia cloride is much faster and cleaner.

I used the seachem stability and it says you can add fish immediately and I did it on my 55 g and I didn't lose any fish but I was using a damsel and some chromis and a clown so fairly hearty fish. Like with anything in this biz use with caution. Best way is to pull out some water add the stuff and test it see if it makes any difference. If it works add it to your main tank.
