I went to my collecting place in the Sound today. There was only one blue claw crab so we threw it back. I picked up about a thousand grass shrimp and some hermits.
I also broke open one of my home made bottles of wine for the first time.
It needs a few more months but it is good already.

I went collecting with a few people today as well. We saw tons of interesting fish, the vast majority were released. I think the coolest things we caught were coronet fish, they were already about a foot in length and were gorgeous to look at. they only eat live fish and grow up to 8 feet in length so keeping them was not an option. unfortunately they are tropical strays and are doomed when winter arrives. this article in the times mentions them.

The coronet fish are AWESOME. Every time I go collecting, the coronets are bigger and bigger. The first time, I mistook them for pipefish they were so small. Now they are about 8-10"' on average.

When I was diving in venezuela, I saw trumpetfish (closely related) and they get HUGE and beautiful. The ones I saw were easily 3 feet long, if not longer.

FYI - for anyone who happens to be locally collecting, both coronets and trumpetfish only eat live feeder fish. Their feeding response seems to be triggered by the actual motion of the fish which is not able to be replicated on a feeding stick.

I went seining a for spearing and i saw a coronet fish about 5 feet from the shore. Approximatedly 18", Scrared the crap out of me since it had a huge spearing in its mouth. Then the baby sand shark changed my mind since it was larger.

Since I took a trip to LI today I went to my favorite grass shrimp collecting spot and I was actually able to collect about 30 grass shrimp, 1 naked goby and a minnow. I was there for about 10 minutes. The grass shrimp are not as abundant as they were when it was warmer but there is still some around. My seahorses and toadfish were very happy tonight :)

Its not only parasites that local fish carry....Here's a picture (hopefully) of a bluefish I caught last year...its got a granuloma caused by Mycobacterium- fish tuberculosis. Turns out there is quite a bit of that in mainly striped bass, but also bluefish. Fortunately, this is the only infected one I caught.

Me too! This sounds very interesting. Is there a saltwater license requirement or regulations on what you can use? I'm asking because Florida is really strict...even for non-reefing beach goers. Picking up an empty shell can land you a fat ticket!

I did not try to collect pods but I found a mudy bay a couple of miles from the lighthouse where I did collect some mud and associated bacteria.
The mud was light brown but if you dug down 1/2" it was black from hydrogen sulfide.
This is the type of substrait I like to collect for diverse bacteria.
I just collected from the surface, the mud was very fine preventing any oxygen to penetrate even 1/2".
My wife and I like to go out there in the winter when the crowds are gone. It was too rough to collect any amount of NSW but I will go again in a week or so and that will be to a calm place called Georgica pond. It is a large very clean lagoon in east Hampton. I have collected there many times. The place is loaded with fish and crabs.

This is a lagoon just north west of the lighthouse, there is a white house that you can barely make out in the distance that I have been trying to buy for many years but it has one too many zero's in the price.
If I could get it, I would suck water right out of the Atlantic which is 20' behind the house and some of the cleanest water on the east coast being the most eastern point besides Maine.

Hi Paul ;-)
So this is how it looks on the other side... :)...well I keep on looking but the line of the horizon doesn't let me see it.... :)...Its very beautiful and looks very good for NSW water collection.
Do you have pictures of NSW collection? I would like to see. Also from your description, the mud you mention looks like a similar one we can collect over here, do you have pictures of the mud as well as the place you collect it? Is it a place like or similar of the one in the first photograph of Dominick J. Cirigliano & Paul Baldassano article Local Collecting in the Tri State Area ?

Thank you for sharing
Cheers

That's what mega millions is for

As for the regs, see here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7894.html

I don't use a boat. I was using a net at the boat ramp.
