Just installed a new skimmer and would like to dampen the pump vibration. Pump is submerged in the sump. Search results show some folks use a mouse pad under external pumps and some apparently use them in the sump. I was curious if those mouse pads are safe to put in the water. Anyone doing this notice any problems? Or does anyone know of any pads specifically made for this purpose? Thanks!

Why not play it on the safe side and use filter sponge media, like Fluval 304 or 404 strips of sponge to dampen the vibration/noise. That is what I use. Mouse pads usually have some graphics printed on them and I sure can't tell you if the foam they use is safe and will not leach any harmful chemicals into the tank... same as for the graphic ink/plastic coating and whatnot that might degrade over time in a salty water enviroment. A mouse pad belongs under a mouse, not under a skimmer or a pump... otherwise, it would be called a pump pad or skimmer pad! LOL Just teasing you. But you get my point, I'm sure.

Neopren works for dampening vibrations. You can by it by the sheet or roll. That is what most mouse pads are. If in sump I would not use somthing that had an overlay or printed graphics.

Yeah, go buy a roll or a sheet a neoprene that will cost you 10 times the price of a package of 404 Fluval replacement foam media. I'm sorry Wazzel but your idea just doesn't cut it as far as cost vs effeciency. Why make things more complicated than they already are?... and more costy at that? Beyond me...

Dude do you know how much neoprene sells for ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Prime-1-2-Thick-Foa ... dZViewItem
$8.00 for a 1 foot by 2 foot section.
Now lets see how much a fluval 404 package costs:
http://cgi.ebay.com/FLUVAL-404-FOAM-PAD ... dZViewItem
$8.24.
:P
You should research things before hand. :)
Dude... you should do the same thing yourself. A replacement package of 404 Fluval foam sells for $3.75 CANADIAN!!! Here's the link if you don't believe me :

Getting prices on e-bay... LMAO... get serious.... DUDE!

Ebay is the cheapest place to buy bulk in filter pads and just about everything else more times than not.. If your going to buy neoprene you might as well buy it in 1'x2' sections. It has a thousand uses. Now at $8 bucks for a 1'x2' section how much do you think a 6"x6" section would be if you found a local shop that sells it?
BTW neoprene are what most mouse pads are made from with a fabric added to one side. You can get a mouse pad for $1.00 at the dollar store and peel the fabric off.

And getting prices off of a web site is any different? The internet is still the internet on ebay or otherwise.
Not to mention the foam will collect crap, and rot much faster than the neoprene. ;)
With the shipping on those pads from Canada you might as well buy the real deal with extra left to use on what ever you can think of that might benefit from it.

Personally, I would be more apt to use the neoprene. It may cost more now but the fluval will, IMO catch detritous and need to be changed out periodically. The neoprene is dense and will not become a nitrate factory

If you look at the amount of neoprene you recieve for the money it's still cheaper. ;)

You could use it under air pumps, water pumps, use it to line the inside of the paneling on your stand to dampen noise, use it to insulate ...anything you can think of.

The cheapest option may not be the best. Neoprene is not expensive, inert, not pours and a good vibration isolater. The sponge may be cheaper, but in the long run I think it would cause a problem. Especally seeing it is a place to catch all the junk that will pass through the sump. It will require weekly cleaning or swapping out for a fresh one. Neoprene will not.

Yah, but like a third of the population is allegic to neoprene :D Now what you want, and is cheaper, is NITRILE. UV stable, closed cell, 100% hypo-allergenic, cheaper the neoprene plus it has a much higher vibration/sound dampenning quality then neoprene :D

Brilliant idea! I'm sure they don't use any glue to make it stick and that glue is surely non toxic for a marine aquarium.

Is that a third of the human population or a third of the fish population?

A picture of Frag's tank is just that...a picture of Frag's tank. Doesn't mean squat. It's not because he has a beatiful tank that he is the alpha and omega in marine husbandry. For all we know, maybe he has a company that comes in and maintains it for him! 8O Who knows? So I don't base my appreciation of an advice given on a simple picture of a reef tank. I base it on logic and facts. Pictures don't prove anything. As an example, it's not because you have a Ferrari in mint condition that you have the same driving ability as Micael Schumacher. Means NOTHING except that he has a beautiful tank. Period.

Generally a picture of a nice looking reef tank showes that people know what they are doing. In this hobby the proof is the presentation. Do you think we would be better taking advice from somone who have been in the hobby for 4 months and likes to toot thier own horn?

Right. I'll remember that when I read your posts. ;)

FWIW, I've seen pics of his tanks...and I've got the frags to prove it too.
